Letters :    from Kevin Keber in Billingborough,  August 2008

Dear Mike.    Thanks for your letter welcoming me to the Association.
I have to admit that I did not set out to own a 77 year-old Singer, having spent my driving years playing with MGs, Triumphs and other assorted British sports cars.   However, after seeing a picture of, and then viewing the car, my partner, daughter and I decided we must own OD 258.
I bought the car from near Mablethorpe, where its previous owner, a Mr Turley, had owned

her for about seven years, and it’s a tribute to him that part of our decision to buy was his charm and clear affection for the vehicle, which he had known for, I believe, about 30 years, it being previously owned by a friend of his, who, as I understand it was the person who had restored the car.  The car is still in pretty good shape considering it is an ‘older’ restoration,

but I intend to have some further work carried out on the bonnet and wheels before winter arrives. As this is my first venture into cars of this age, I am still learning a new driving technique, and whilst the upward gear changes are going well, the down-shifts are still still slowly improving. I also need to learn some more maintenance skills before the winter!
Once again, thanks for the welcome and I hope to meet some fellow club members in the not too distant future.
                        Yours,   Kevin.

Dear Kevin.  Many thanks for your letter and photos of your Junior, which is actually a 1932 model,as evidenced by the lack of a peak above the windscreen, shape of top of radiator

cowl, chrome hub caps (on 18” wheels) and no battery on the left running board.   With regard to driving technique and down-shifts, you should find that the engine pulls well at fairly low revs, so I would suggest you try changing down at lower speeds - any gear grating will then be kinder to the gears and much less embarrassing!
You may also find it is better to start off in 2nd gear - the take up will be much smoother - and that you only need to use 1st gear for starting on hills.
               Best wishes,    Mike.
