Sunday dawned fairly fine, but our landlady had ominous tales of nasty weather on the way.   Unfortunately she was right - perhaps a distant relative of Mother Shipton?  We arrived at a very soggy Newby Hall and managed to get the club pitch set up before the rain started, but the raindrops came down again as the ladies were giving the gardens the once-over and I was

having a quick look round the autojumble.

Mike’s ‘Easy-Up’ gazebo proved itself worth the effort by giving us a dry(ish) area in which to display the trophies and regalia, but now and again it played little practical jokes on unsuspecting loiterers by suddenly dumping quantities of water from the roof!

Unfortunately, however, the huge amount of work done by the NECPWA (North-Eastern Club for Pre-War Austins) in getting hundreds of pre-war and classic cars to the event, and arranging various other attractions, was all to no avail, as the silver band played to an audience of one bedraggled bloke and his dog, the main Autoglym concours judge tried valiantly to remain

enthusiastic whilst his judging forms disintegrated in the wet, and many entrants gave up the fight with the weather and left early.   ASCO, of course, soldiered on, the attendance being one of the highest for several years, and it was great to see our plot filling up as the more northerly contingent arrived in force, making a total of 18 Singers, plus a Rover 95 and an MGBGT.

We also found two of the three other Gazelles booked into the rally, one being the 1960 Ser lllA belonging to V Simpson, the other being member Bruce Pickup's 1961 Convertible.  We never did find the two Chamois listed, nor the 1928 Senior or 1928 Junior.
The oldest present was Ken Mellor’s 1929 Junior and youngest Don Croucher’s 1964 Ser V Gazelle.

In between was a spectacular display of high quality Le Mans and Sports, headed by Wayne Gibson’s superb B37, fresh from racing success at Brooklands, an equally impressive array of Roadsters, two almost identical Hunters and Barry’s recently

acquired Ten saloon, plus, of course, David Swann’s superb recreation of the Red Brooklands Racer KV 5670.   Scroll down to see a picture of each of the magnificent cars on display.  The Gibsons had also brought the aluminium cylinder block and head they have produced for the 9hp engine in their latest project - the complete rebuild of the works team Ards TT car AVC 481.  The head is so light you can easily lift it with one hand! Amazingly they have found a Works Order for aluminium blocks and heads for the TT team cars, in archive material about the car.  The VSCC have agreed that this is admissible, and it is hoped to have the car ready to race at Le Mans in 2008.

Despite the inclement weather, it could not wash away the good-natured, friendly

atmosphere that pervaded the field, and spirits remained high to the end.  But it was clear that the rain was not going to abate, so the awards ceremony was brought forward and the trophies were presented at 3pm.   The award winners are tabulated below.   Once the award ceremony was over and the winners had chosen their little ‘extra’ goodies from a selection of 6” stainless steel rules, assorted spring washers, assorted split pins, torches, disposable knives, magnetic pick-up tools and a few unclaimed odds and ends from previous years, packing up was carried out in a matter of minutes.

And so another excellent SNCR came to a close, and on behalf of the club and all who attended over the weekend, our thanks to Graham Smith, Russ Sayers, Binny Baker and all who helped in organising such a memorable event for us.                                                                                                                                                                                                             Peter.
