| We set off on the scenic route provided by our organising team, which showed up the dales and surrounding areas very nicely. At one point I overtook Barry and Ann in their (new) Singer 10, as they were too slow on the hills for me to keep the Roadster in top gear, and second (3-speed gearbox) kills the speed completely. I felt bad about it later when I found that Barry’s car was suffering from fuel starvation | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| problems caused by a blocked pipe from the tank, and it had been necessary to jury-rig a petrol can under the bonnet, much to Ann’s consternation, as she thereafter suffered the effects of inhaling petrol fumes. The scenic route also took in the delights of the Black Sheep Brewery in Masham, where a ‘shepherded’ tour had been arranged. Jonathan Theakston, of the brewing company taken over by Scottish and Newcastle a number of years ago, had set up a new brewery in old buildings virtually next door, to produce Real Ale by traditional methods. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| The tour finished with a visit to the 'baa-r' for people to claim their ‘free’ half pint of beer. Pity I hate the taste of the stuff, but fortunately there was tea, coffee and | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| soft drinks available instead. Our ‘shepherd’ told us all about the ingredients used, including hops from a farm about 20 miles from ‘The Salt Box’, and regaled us with talk of fermentation processes and round squares. Confused? - ewe will just have to read up on your brewing procedures! | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||

The
Club Dinner. On the Saturday evening about 30 of us sat down to dinner in the very large dining room of ‘The Crown’, at Boroughbridge, feeling like a few pebbles in a big bucket, but the meal was very good and was enjoyed by all. |

Our after-dinner treat was a presentation by Binny Baker , wife of member Ian Baker, of film footage from the Yorkshire Film Archive, entitled '100 years of Yorkshire Transport'. Binny had put together a selection of road transport-related items covering various subjects, including Leeds Bridge in 1897, the Grand Prix di Pozzo, 1929, by Alan Pickard - a live action and animated fiction film based on the editorial of a Car Magazine of the time, featuring the wonderful Madame Turnlepetroloff, to the first ever animated commercial with synchronised sound - Mr York of Yorks - Rowntree, 1929, and the ‘bouncing lady’ at the Sheffield Hill Climb in 1950. There was also film of the Double-Twelve Hour Race at Brooklands, and amateur film showing traffic in the streets, which I’m sure everyone found quite fascinating, with shots of trams and trolley-buses running along roads completely devoid of other vehicles, reminding us just how much times have changed. |
