The Singer Car Centenary Celebration

MOTORING enthusiasts from around the world came to Coventry to celebrate the centenary of a car produced in the city. Singer owners from New Zealand, Holland and Germany were among those joining the three-day celebration at the weekend.
Events included a display of Singer models outside Coventry Transport Museum, a visit to the old factory frontage at Coventry Street, Hillfields, a visit to founder George Singer’s grave in London Road and his former home in the grounds of Coundon Court School and a dinner at the Royal Court Hotel in Keresley. There was also an event at Stoneleigh Park on Sunday when vehicles on show included a 1907 Singer, believed to be the oldest surviving example of the marque in Britain..
John Taylor, of the Singer Owners’ Club (and of ASCO), which organised the event, said it was important to remember the cars, despite them disappearing from our streets 35 years ago.
“There is a hell of a following for Singer cars,” he said. “We had people there from all over the world.
Singer was the third largest manufacturer in the UK behind Morris and Austin in the late 1920s and 30s.”
Singer was taken over by the Rootes-Chrysler Group in 1955 but the name remained until 1970, when it was finally dropped.
After the Second World War, Singer experienced economic difficulties, and the shareholders accepted an offer to stay in Coventry and enter the Rootes organisation. Several popular cars went into mass production, including the Gazelle and Vogue - but by the late ‘60s Rootes/Chrysler were contracting, and in 1970 the once famous marque was abandoned - hopefully not of the same fate awaiting MG now under Chinese ownership.
