Evidence Based Practice and Care Pathways Monday, 12th May 2003 Contact: Michael Humber (events@ukhi.org.uk)
Overview It is widely believed that health care should be more evidence based. There are a number of groups producing some excellent material, but is that enough? How do we ensure that evidence actually influences practice? Suggested solutions include making the education of health professionals more evidence based and improving real-time access to the material so that it can be used during the consultation (i.e. when and where it is needed). Are Care Pathways the vehicle for delivering evidence based medicine? Should supporting Care Pathways be a core aim of the NHS's IT programme? This event was designed to explore these questions. There was a mix of discussion presentations, previews of the latest innovations and we heard from some of those who have successfully implemented Care Pathways that have led to more evidence based practice.
Programme and Presentations The event was Chaired by Richard Smith (Editor, BMJ) and Muir Gray (Director, National electronic Library for Health). We were delighted to have two guest speakers; Prof Aidan Halligan (Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Department of Health) and Kenneth Mandl (Assistant Professor, Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA).
