Here are a selection of emails and guest book entries I have
received from people who have tried the immobiliser fix..

I recently emailed this information to Colin Melville (2.0l 16V) who's car had been immobile for 3 weeks. Here is his reply....

"Michael,

Got the board re-soldered and car is working again ...BRILLIANT! It's like I've got a new car...Thanks for all your help! "

Colin Melville

And more thanks from R Stockdale (2.5l 24V)

"
Thanks for the excellent info on the web page. I now have the car running sweet again and with no more embarrassing conk outs. You are right about having the correct tools, I ended up having to hacksaw the bracket off after stripping the star screws with an Allen key. Still it was worth it. I owe you a beer......cheers"

Another success story from Sue Worden
09/12/00

"Thanks for the information on repairing the immobiliser - my husband followed your instructions and sure enough the very same joints were 'dodgy'. He re-soldered two weeks ago and since then I have not had any further trouble. Many thanks, if you're ever near Lytham send me a message and we'll buy you a pint."

Rob Stockdale later added this enlightening comment :

"The Ford garage
did not have any information and were reluctant to do anything until they could replicate the fault."

The lesson that should be learned from this is that Ford are the last people to take a Ford Probe to. I have heard repeatedly that Mazda know more about the Ford Probe because it is really a Mazda in disguise. Their prices for parts are also significantly less.

And a first for 2001 - Dave Loftus 8/05/2001

"Michael,
I just wanted to say a brief, but heartfelt thank you for the information on "How to fix it". I carried out the soldering last Thursday evening and was amazed to find how easy it actually was to cure the problem. It took roughly two hours from start to finish and what was interesting was the joints were exactly the same as the ones in your article. Once again thanks for the information and if you ever find yourself in the Southampton area my telephone number is ----------- so I can buy you a pint. At the rate your going you may never have to buy a beer again! "

Dave Loftus

Thanks Dave - all pledges of drink vouchers to the email address at the top of the page.

Paul Leedham 13/06/01

Michael,

Many thanks for the step-by-step instructions on how to fix the immobiliser module. My 24V had been giving me grief for over a year now, and having got totally fed-up with slapping the passenger side of the centre console (this temporarily fixes it, you know), I decided to take the plunge last week.

It took about an hour to complete from start to finish. There was no problem finding the dry joints - a crack was visible about half-way up, and fully around the soldered joint... I had the same ones cracked as illustrated in you instructions, although there was no brown discolouration to the circuit board.

Anyway, I used a magnifying glass to assist in identifying the failed joints (you can really see the cracks then!!), used a desoldering pump, as suggested, re-soldered, refitted, and it's worked ever since!!! Much better than 10-20 cut-outs per day!!

That's another beer you're owed... in fact I reckon I'd buy the beer's for the whole night!!! Please let me know if you're ever down near Derby, and you can take my up on this offer!

Please feel free to take this note and add it to your website.

Barry Wood 19/06/01

Michael,

Well what can I say, ......except the common "I owe you a pint"

I removed the suspect circuit board after a little bit of a fiddly time getting the rivets out of the units mounting and guess what I found ? Two connections found looking rather dodgy indeed, exactly where you said they would be. I removed the old solder and resoldered on those two connections and checked the whole board, no other bad connections found. I have now refitted the lot and haven't had a problem yet.

I would like to thank you for the information supplied, and also the information I have just received from you on the rear suspension alignment, that's another job another day.

I'll let you know if I have any problem with that immobiliser, but I don't think I will now.

Again ...Thank you very much.

Barry.
