MOROCCAN CHARITY BALL 1998
For this occasion I came up with the concept of slaves to extract funds for the charity in
exchange for services.
I also had a Souk selling exotic treasures a fabulous silk lined
Moroccan tent (kindly loaned by Momo of the world famous Momo's) in
which was housed the den of iniquity where two masseuses worked their
wonders behind moucharabieh screens and two belly dancers worked theirs
for guests lying on silken cushions while a palmist told tales of a
thousand and one nights.
One guest celebrated his fortieth birthday at the ball. I was comissioned to create
"Pasha's Palace" at one end of the huge marquee this was lined with the original tent
hangings from the film "Lawrence of Arabia".
Huge gilt palm trees separated the area which became a stage, entertaining the remaining guests
outside this cast of players, as they ate their Bedouin feast. From low tables with polished
brass trays and sitting on silken cushions. Beautiful oriental girls served his guests to
complete the decadent scene.
The previous week I took "Peter the Pasha" for fittings of his costume, even having a wig-maker
create a handle-bar moustache to match his eyebrows.
The "slaves" tramped through my house and left having raided the deepest recesses of my
wardrobes and bijoutery boxes, transformed.
For me, the joy of decorating or organising a party is to transform the venue and the occasion
into something magical and memorable for all who attend.
