Chinawhite - chinawhite came as big surprise to me one Friday when I was selling Moroccan antiques and lanterns on my stall in Portobello Market. I got a 'phone call from my old mate Rory. "Could he have a meeting with me, as he would like me to help him with the decoration of his new night club, and when could I see the site and meet his partner, John Stephen?" I was delighted but explained I couldn't possibly leave my stall, so they came over. And an arrangement was made.

I then met the lovely Cara Satmoko, an Indonesian architect, who sourced all the antiques and stone for Rory. We worked together amongst the dust, builders and carpenters and attended numerous hard hat parties festooned with building site safety lights as the opening dates came and went. We all managed to create a very successful exotic and fun environment which subsequently others have aspired to but with nothing like the same success.

Chinawhite's success was a surprise even to the owners as within two weeks of opening, there was a two hour queue at the door almost every night.
