Homework

Why is homework important?

  • It reinforces skills learned at school.

  • It keeps you informed as to what your child is doing at school and will give you an indication of their success.

  • It encourages school work to be discussed at home.

  • It encourages independent learning by your child.

What will the homework involve?

  • Homework will be sent home on a weekly basis for most weeks of the school year.

  • The homework sheet will remind the children of deadlines.

  • The back of the sheet will outline the Numeracy, Literacy and one further activity for the week as well as the spellings to be learned.

  • Work will be discussed in class and will often be part of a future lesson, so it is very important that homework is completed.

  • We will provide any paper that is needed.

  • There will often be rewards for good homework.

  • There is a space for you to comment if you wish to.

How can you help?

  • To encourage your child to complete their homework on time.

  • Can you find a quiet place and time at home for your child to work uninterrupted?

  • Resist the temptation to do their homework for them!

  • Talk about what your child is doing and give them time to explain to you the methods they are using... you'll find some have changed!

  • Praise your child if they have really tried to produce an independent piece of work.

  • Please let us know if your child is having any difficulties with out homework programme: we want them to succeed.

How long should it take?

The school follows the Government's guidance on the amount of time children should be spending on homework each week:

Years 1 & 2 - 1 hour per week

Years 3 & 4 - 1½ hours per week

Years 5 & 6 - 30 minutes per day

plus 15 - 20 minutes reading per day

The majority of homework set throughout school will focus on numeracy and literacy work - spellings, daily reading, learning tables / number bonds etc.

The older children will be set occasional research assignments and science homework.
