My link with the Odell family starts with my great great grandmother, who had the wonderful name of Mary Philadelphia Odell (1839-1926). Mary's father was Thomas Alexander Odell (abt. 1803-1870) who came from the Protestant Irish Odell family. Mary married Frederick William Carter, my great great grandfather.

According to the Hall of Names family surname history "The English family O'Dell …. were descended from the great Doomsday Baron Walter of Wodhull, which was later corrupted and included in the title the lords of Wodhull. The senior line feudal lords died during the reign of Henry VIII but junior lines adopted the spelling Odell and they went to Ireland to Westmeath and Waterford, the name became O'Dell." The Victoria County History for Bedfordshire traces the descent of the Barony of Wodhull from Walter the Fleming (c.1066) to the sixteenth century and Nicholas Wodhull (abt. 1504-1531), who lived at Thenford Manor in Northamptonshire. The barony passed to Nicholas's eldest son Anthony, while my lineage is traced from his other son Fulke (1530-1613). Three generations later Major John Odell (1620-25? - abt. 1700) obtained a grant of estates in co. Limerick in Ireland and so began the story of the Odells In Ireland.

Burke’s Irish Landed Gentry  traces the Odell Family back from John Odell  of Ballingarry, co. Limerick in Ireland.
