Setting up a fly rod for the first time can seem complicated to the beginner, it certainly did to me!

 

Typically there are four line components that need to be joined together, the fly line backing, the fly line, the leader and the wire trace.

 

There are many different ways to achieve this and the knots shown below are just one way.

 

•  Arbor knot:    To tie the backing to the fly reel spool

 

•  Albright knot: To tie the fly line to the backing

 

•  Nail knot:      To tie the leader to the fly line

 

Some fly lines come fitted with braided loops at each end, or these can be added separately. This allows for simple loop to loop connections to the fly line without using the knots shown.

 

The leader then needs to be joined to the wire trace and how you do this all depends on the trace used. Some anglers use knotable trace wire while others incorporate swivels etc. I will leave the trace connection for now.
