Wirral
Fantasy Football League, or WFFL
for short, began life in 1998 as a mere pastime
during idle lunch hours at Wirral Grammar
School for Boys. Few could have envisaged,
however, the prestige that this competition
would gather and the pace at which it would
evolve.
During
its fledgling years, the tournament remained
nameless and was referred to simply as Fantasy
Football. Competitors came and went, but
a core of loyal devotees remained. The principal
battleground for aspiring managers was, and
continues to be, the Premier League,
though the competition has subsequently grown
to encompass a number of other esteemed tournaments,
including the FA Cup, UEFA Champions
League [discontinued], UEFA European
Championships [discontinued] and FIFA
World Cup. The League was an undeniable
success, but was to be halted abruptly in
2001 by circumstances beyond the competitors'
control.
The
League took a two year hiatus from 2001-2003
during what are commonly referred to as the
University Years. The situation
was to eventually be resolved, however, thanks
largely to the marvel of the Internet. It
was in 2003 that WFFL, as we know it,
truly came to be.
The
importance of the WFFL Forum cannot
be understated. It has become a centre of
operations for the League and its competitors.
It was with the creation of the Forum
and this very Website that
the competition was ultimately branded WFFL.
Since then, it has never looked back.
The
history of WFFL is not entirely rosy,
with misunderstandings and disagreements abound.
However, the competition has thrived and continues
to gather momentum and support. The Initial
Bidding Session is now a highlight
of the calender year and the future of WFFL
appears bright.
The
latest innovation to be introduced is the
WFFL Champion's Trophy. In 2007/08,
not only will the managers' pride be on the
line, but this highly coveted prize to honour
the WFFL Premiership champion. |
