Moo Duk Kwan can be translated as the 'school or Organisation that teaches Moo and Duk through training in the martial arts', where moo means 'martial, military or prevent inner / outer conflict' and duk means ' virtue, ethics and discipline'.

The MDK organisation was founded on 9th November, 1945 by Grand Master Hwang Kee (Kwan Jang Nim Hwang Kee). The first MDK school was opened on the same date at Yong San Ku, Seoul, Korea.

The MDK was founded principally to contribute to human development in Weh Gong (external power), Neh Gong (internal power) and Shim Gong (spiritual power). This MDK philosophy is based on Do (Tao) and the teachings of No Ja ( Lao Tzu).

The MDK under the direction of its founder has taught its members not only the techniques of the martial art Soo Bahk Do, but also the ethical and Moo Do (Martial Art) discipline which the MDK has maintained as a precious tradition. Indeed, the MDK has earned a reputation for high quality both in techniques and Moo Do discipline and the respect of martial artists world-wide.

The MDK has as its foundation the  8 key concepts (See literature for more details).

Allied to the key concepts are the 10 'Articles of Faith' (See literature for more details)

On the promotion of any student to Cho Dan (1st Dan) they are awarded a dan bon or dan number by the Grandmaster, and their name and number recorded in the Kwan Jeok Bu (MDKs definitive book listing the date of seniority of the organisations members). This dan bon system is unique to MDK and it exists not only to assist the Organisations administration but also for the discipline of Moo Do seniority. As respect for ones' seniors is seen as a prerequisite of a traditional Moo Do organisation, the dan bon system can be seen as an invaluable aid within the MDK.

The Headquarters of World MDK is in Seoul, Korea, under the auspices of its Founder and President, Grand Master Hwang Kee. The Vice-President of the Organisation is Sa Bom Nim H C Hwang, who resides in New Jersey, USA.
