Gradesaver Notes
Includes a fair account of the novel's content and characters ideal for those who are coming to the novel for the first time.  Also includes focused commentaries on certain sections of the novel and a decent message board where readers can ask/answer question and invite discussion.  Those who are studying for examinations or writing coursework can also have their material checked, altered and improved by specialised Harvard editors.

An Introduction to The Color Purple
A small but worth while read on The Color Purple, written by Catherine Lavender. Provides a brief summary, as well as some critical insights from leading feminist bell hooks [Bell Hooks]. Only three pages long but includes many interesting links including the chance to ‘listen in’ on a discussion about the novel by students attending The University of Virginia.

Anniina's Alice Walker Page
Anniina Jokinen’s excellent site on Alice Walker includes links featuring articles, biographies and essays on the work of the African American author and poet. The site is also frequently updated with various sorts of criticism and despite only carrying a handful of links for The Color Purple the site remains one of the most frequently visited and is a must for any fan of Alice Walker.

Racism & Domesticity in The Color Purple
An excellent essay on the theme of race and domesticity in The Color Purple written by Linda Selzer, concentrating on the last forty letters from where Celie realises the extent of Albert’s evil in hiding Nettie’s letters. One drawback is that the language seems to be pitched at higher level than Advanced but the essay can be between thirteen and forty sides long depending on the text size you require so there is plenty there for you to read.

Spark Notes On-Line Guide to The Color Purple
Both lengthy and in-depth, this contribution to the acclaimed literature site by Selena Ward studies all ninety letters, giving brief summaries along with more sophisticated commentaries after every ten or so letters. Includes a page on Alice Walker as well as fair summaries of all the main and minor characters in the novel. Also includes a message board so members of the public can go on-line to post their questions and queries for others to answer.

Alice Walker Biography
Written by Mindy Jackson, this is perhaps the best but not the most lengthy Alice Walker biography on the web. Includes accurate references to all of Walker’s novels, her volumes of poetry and short stories.
