Thomas Mitchell Of Thainstone
The Mitchells are an old Aberdeenshire, Scotland family of Saxon Origin. Thainstone near Inverurie in that county was the old family estate. My mother's grandfather according to family records among the Mitchells, went out with Prince Charles in the jacobite rebellion od 1745 and the estate was taken from him, and given to a relative who remained faithful to the House of Hanover. Their descendants were still occupying the Estate when I left Scotland in 1890. Mitchells had been on the estate of Thainstone away back into the mazes of Scottish history.
The following information was taken from the books Lord Provosts of Aberdeen and Jacobities in the Fifteen :-
Provost Mitchell was the second son of Baillie Thomas Mitchell of Tilliegrieg, by his second wife, Marjory Moir, one of the old Aberdeen family of that name. The Provost was born 1659 (baptised 16th January) and in 1692 the first year in which he was elected to the magistracy, He married three times (1) Janet Leslie daughter of Provost Sir Patrick Leslie, (2) Isabella Paton, sister of Alexander Paton, afterwards Provost of Aberdeen, (3) Jean Mercer
In 1703 he purchased the lands of Easter Beltie and Annesley from Sir Robert Forbes of Lenrny, and in 1717 the estates of Thainston, near Kintore, from Forbes of Tolguhan.
