NEW WEST WINDOW

Next Page

August 1952

The West Window has not been touched, because we propose carrying out Mrs. Moor’s wishes and installing a pictorial window in memory of Prebendary Moor. We invited Mr. Charles Knight (artist-brother of the Revd. John Knight) to submit preliminary designs, and these the Council inspected and warmly approved. They are for a central figure of S. Richard of Chichester (the 700h anniversary of whose death is being celebrated next year) supported by circular medallions illustrating episodes of his life, the whole delicately interlaced with a fig tree, the culture of whose fruit S. Richard is said to have encouraged. There will a good deal of clear glass, and Mr. Knight is taking great care in the choice of colours, so that the maximum of light shall shine through the window. The drawings will be on view in due course, and subject to the approval of the Diocesan Board of Faculties, we hope that the window shall be installed by S. Richard’s Day, 16th June, 1953. We have also asked Mr. Knight to submit a drawing for a statue of The Good Shepherd to be placed in the outside niche in the West Gable for which Mrs. Moor left a small legacy.

The Council also intends asking Mr. Joseph Gribb (who is responsible for the excellent lettering on the War Memorial, in memory of Fr. Allen at the entrance to the Lady Chapel) to cut an inscription in memory of Mr. Norman Richards on the Organ case.

 Yours Sincerely R. JONATHAN HILLS
