Fr. HEWLETT'S LETTER
Whitton House, Crawley, Sussex
My Dear Friends,
and, I can only think, my very rich friends. I very much doubt if I
expressed my thanks adequately at the All Hallows Party. I am not very good at expressing
things adequately anyway, unless I have well and truly prepared what I am going to say
beforehand ; and it isn't any easier when one's breath has just been taken away. But you
have set me up royally in my new job: not only with a bicycles which looks noble even in
continuous rain and mud, and get me to church on time even after dark - except when the
level crossing gates are against me, as they usually are ; but also with a watch of
surprising accuracy, that I can now confidently contradict all the church clocks and prove
that I wasn't late after all And more to come they say. Well! Thanks you all tremendously,
not only for what you have given me but, for all you have been to me for three most
important, and enjoyable years of my life. Yes, Peter, of course I enjoyed my job ; who
wouldn't, with such a likeable crowd to work with ? I hope to see lots more of you yet.
Yours sincerely, Michael Hewlett
