Into the New Year
As we come to the beginning of a new year I'm pleased to announce a few changes to the band for 2009
We have a new Musical Director, former Carlton Brass Flugelhorn player Steve Mercs has taken up the baton, and everyone within the band wishes him the best of luck and we'll do our best to improve and help him to help us be the best band we can
On a related note a great many thanks to Ken Dunkin who for a large portion of last year kindly stood in as acting musical director and kept the band going when the future looked grim
there have also been some changes in the band, we have a new arrival on cornet, Terry Thay who is doing a brilliant job having moved up from the beginners band. Eleanor Prout has been promoted to solo cornet, a promotion well deserved. Martin Tetley has moved from Solo Cornet to Flugelhorn, Jack Cooper has moved from Flugelhorn to Solo Horn, Chris Tetley has moved from First Baritone to BBb Bass and Olga Zajaczkowski has moved from 1st Horn to 1st Baritone. Website update
As you may have noticed the website has been updated, most obvious one of course are the valves on the side of the page where the links used to be, you also might have noticed the coloured scrollbars (Internet Explorer only) and the yellow border on this window. Another new feature is that for safety reasons the right click function of your mouse is disabled whilst on this page. There are going to be more updates to come in the next few weeks, the most noticeable of which is that the gallery will be changing format and layout soon, if all goes well their will also be a password protected section of the site for band members only with the forum, games, useful information and maybe a few other things. If any one has any ideas for the site please do contact me, my email address is in the contacts under Webmaster. On a different note the band currently has a shortage of cornet players, Carlton Brass Training Band is open to anyone old or you to come and play if they wish and if you want to play we will help you all we can.

Comments in the guestbook appreciated but please keep comments clean and no personal insults, I must stress that any personal insults to members of the band will not be tolerated, if such comments are posted they will be deleted and the perpetrator blocked from the website. I apologise if this sounds harsh but this is a matter that the committee feels very strongly about

Ireland Entertainment Contest
The Training Band Today had their second contest ever and won their first piece of silverware.

The band won the best lower section shield so the band should feel very proud of itself. Also our very own Isla Scott should be very pleased with herself for being one of the best soloists there and the fact it was her first concert solo so the whole band deserves a pat on the back

Hayley Donze
The whole organisation is in a state of shock after the
tragic loss of young Hayley through meningitis.
Hayley was the first junior band member to progress through to the senior band
and was a very strong and talented cornet player who had great potential. Hayley
was never too proud to muck in and help us out at training band jobs and her
talent and dedication to the organisation should be an example to us all. Hayley
had many friends and schoolmates in the training band who will miss her terribly
but will remember her fondly.
Our sincere condolences and sympathy are extended to Hayley's family at this
difficult time.
Please see the Carlton Brass web site for tributes to Hayley and details of the
funeral / remembrance service 'Hayley - A Celebration of Life'
Pauline Kirk
We are very sad to report the death of Pauline Kirk.
Pauline played tenor horn with the training band for many years. She was very
dedicated to the bands success and was always one of the first to arrive and
last to leave rehearsals. Her invaluable work as the bands librarian will be
sorely missed. We recently held an open rehearsal at St Georges and invited
Pauline's family, friends and colleagues as a show of support to her. This
turned into a full blown concert with over 100 people attending. The training
band gave perhaps its best ever performance. Goodbye Pauline you will be greatly
missed.
Pauline's funeral service will be held at St Georges Church on Monday 26th Sept
02:00 pm.

Gamston Fete / Kirkby Contest 25th/26th June 2005
The weekend saw a feast of brass band activity.
Early Saturday afternoon the training band played at the Gamston Village Fete.
Like last year, this was a very enjoyable event for most of us (Top marks for
the real ale refreshment tent).
Michael's forgotten cornet caused great mirth amongst the band. Several amusing
announcements from the Fete DJ/compare helped heap the misery on poor Michael.
Several of the band joined in in the various sporting competitions such as the
egg throwing, sack race and tug-o-war. The audience seemed very appreciative of
our music and we had a great time. We are looking forward to a third invite next
year.
Several members of the band later attended Grimethorpe Colliery's fantastic
concert at the Royal Concert Hall. The concert was awesome with some jaw
dropping performances. They even Played Hymn to the Fallen and Death or
Glory - two of the training bands repertoire. And it was so sweet when they
fluffed one of the cornet entries on Hymn to the fallen - just like Phil and
Michael often do, so there is hope for them yet.
Sunday morning and the band entered its first competition at Kirkby-in-Ashfield
Festival Hall were we came a very creditable second to Long Eaton training band.
See the gallery for pictures at the Gamston Fete.

Band Social
The Carlton Band Organisation held its annual social evening on the 19 February

The training band was represented at the event
by 10 or so members.
Our very own Gwen was honoured guest of the
night when she was presented with the George Slattery Memorial cup for her
dedication to the training band and the teaching of our young players. Well done
Gwen.
The training band were in fine voice and gave
some brilliant performances on the Karaoke .... NOT..

Training Band Members Help Carlton Brass
win the 2nd Section National Mineworkers contest
Well done to all Training Band
members who competed at the recent National Mineworkers Contest with Carlton
Brass. A most enjoyable day was had at Butlins in Skegness. The Band played a
blinder and came top out of 14 bands to win this prestigious competition by two
clear points.
Our players should take note that
Shirland Training Band came second. Also Thoresby Youth band
entered their first competition playing in the 4th section. Lets make 2005 a
year of solid progress. Their is no reason why we should not be competing in
competitions in the near future.

Training Band Members Help Carlton Brass
Well done to Michael for his first venture out with Carlton Brass senior band. A most enjoyable concert was given to the audience at St Luke's church in Loscoe. A recent record number of current and past members of the training band swelled the senior ranks in this concert. Isla, Phil, Michael and Hayley on back row cornet, Claire on second horn, Ken on second Baritone, John on BBb bass and Henry on percussion (who was star of the show with his xylophone solo). Let's all keep up the hard work and progress so that when the senior band need to borrow players they only ever have to look in one place.

Training Band Gets New Resident Composer
Move over Eric Ball, there are new up and coming composers on the brass band scene. After receiving a music software package from school for her GCSE studies, Isla (14) finished her first composition. You can hear it on the main page. Anybody else wishing to showcase their composing talents on the site should submit a small midi file to Phil.

Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue
The training band would like
to welcome an old and a new member. Manjit joins us on 2nd Cornet and is already
making some fine sounds. Jack comes back on the front row having left the main
band due to his study and exam commitments.
Continuing the theme we look forward to working with
conductor Tony Wilson, who we are borrowing from the main band for the Gedling
Gala concert whilst Claire is away.
Finally to complete the rhyme we must mention how much
we like playing Blue's All Rise that we have recently added to our repertoire.
These tenuous links bring us to the real issue. The
Training Band would like to wish Claire and her partner the very best of luck
for their forthcoming marriage. We all hope you have a wonderful day and that
you have a long and happy life together.

Henry & Carlton Brass win at Newstead
As predicted our Henry won the best soloist prize in the Newstead series of
concerts for his excellent playing of Mac & Mac. Carlton Brass also won the most
entertaining concert prize.
The training band, who played a
significant part of this program, can therefore be very proud of their
contribution to this prize winning night of entertainment.
Full details on the main Carlton
Brass web page.

CB-TB Wows Newstead
Well done to the training band for
the excellent showing at the Newstead concert on Sunday 9th May. We impressed a
lot of people with our progress, especially the younger members.
Many people commented on Michael's solos and we wouldn't be surprised if Henry
is considered for the soloist prize for his fantastic rendition of Mac & Mac
with the main band.

Mutiny In The Ranks
Having been deprived of their usual half-time break for a number of weeks, the militant youth wing of the training band, led by Our 'enry, presented a petition to Claire. The petition was backed up with threats of strike action if the break was not restored. Claire was quite surprised to see her own signature on the petition! A hasty deal was struck that the break would be restored after the next couple of concerts provided that there is more home practice so less is needed at rehearsal. So it will be back to the normal snogging, smoking, and fighting at half-time very soon. (Well we assume that's what they do out there!)

The Training Band gets new uniforms and a new web site
The Training Band were recently
issued with a smart new polo shirt which will form part of its new uniform. The
polo shirts display the Carlton Brass crossed trumpet logo and the wording
'Carlton Brass Training Band'. The shirts are the same colour as the old LMS
livery, commemorating the band's origins in the rail industry over 100 years
ago. The uniform was funded by the senior band with monies received from its
sponsorship package from Lakeside. Our thanks to David Bond and Lakeside for
their generosity.
The election of the Training Band Committee sees the band taking more
responsibility for its day-to-day running. It therefore seemed sensible that we
also take ownership of our own website. Phil Scott, the band's Public Relations
committee member, will take on this task. Contributions of news and photos from
all members will be very welcome. Please check the 'News' and 'Engagements'
sections on a regular basis as they will contain important announcements and
details of forthcoming jobs. Also don't forget to use the guest book where you
can leave messages for other band members
We thank Ray from the senior band for all his past work providing a Training
Band page on the Carlton Brass web site and for his assistance in getting this
site up and running.
The Training Band forms its own committee
On February 20th 2004, the Training Band elected a new organising committee. This will enable the Training Band to be more independent from the main band and will give the band flexibility to organise its own concerts and fund raising. We will of course, retain close relations with our senior band and continue to receive its full backing and support.
The Committee elected are as follows:-
Chairman David Sheath
Secretary Charlotte Braker
Treasurer George Green
Librarian Pauline Kirk
PR Phil Scott
Equipment Secretary Fred Straw
Musical Director Claire Botterhill
Assistant MD Gwen Wooley
Carlton Brass Liason John Hunt
