Process Operator Training Workbooks

Are your profits disappearing into the sunset? Workbook cover
Could your operating staff be doing better?  Is it a question of practise?

Are you worried that the skills of your process operators are deteriorating with improvements in advanced control that reduce the number of operator interventions in running your plant?  Do you recognize the difference between knowledge, competencies and real operating skills?  Do you realize that while knowledge and competencies can be taught that operating skills must be practised?

How do you practise skills that are used so infrequently?

Operator Training Simulators are the best training tools because they very closely replicate the tasks that a panel operator must complete, and do it with the same interface that is used on the plant.  The only downside is that OTSs are expensive, take time to develop and require dedicated resources to get the most out of them.  If you're looking for something quicker and cheaper, why not consider APESS Training Workbooks to supplement your existing training program?

What are APESS Training Workbooks?

APESS Training Workbooks provide real examples of the types of problems that operators face on a daily basis. Each problem starts with a DCS screenshot. Each solution is a course of action. Template solutions are provided in an accompanying workbook. Operators can either work through problems individually or as part of a team. Alternatively, self-training is possible by providing the ‘problems and solutions’ workbook, instead of the ‘problems only’ workbook. The basic workbook includes generic examples but customised workbooks, using screenshots from any specific operating site, can be created on request. A tailor made solution to your training needs!

Why use APESS Training Workbooks?

Process operators are the main interface between a production facility and the products that it makes.  Therefore, it makes sense to develop and improve operating skills as much as possible.  As an absolute minimum, the maintenance of operating skills should be given a high priority.

These workbooks focus on skills such as:

  • detecting dangerous or sub-standard operating conditions
  • optimising and fine-tuning plant operation
  • estimating operating conditions from limited data
  • rectifying problems in the most efficient way
The obvious benefits of improving these skills include:
  • fewer operating incidents
  • faster recovery from abnormal situations
  • less time spent operating at sub-optimal conditions
  • longer equipment life via the avoidance of damaging situations

Who can benefit?

APESS Training Workbooks are relevant to trainee operators, experienced operators, engineering staff and even engineering students who want to familiarize themselves with real-world problems.  Skills training can be useful across the board.  How valuable are process operator skills to you and your business?
