The new Activ8 futsal fives league - Week 5

Futsal MN10 2 FC Dave 3

A low scoring game this one but it was none the less exciting for that. Some amazing defensive play from both teams meant that players had very little time on the ball and passing needed to be (and was!) incisive. The duck was broken in the first half by David Smeathers after Dom Hallas played a great ball through the middle. Bobby Smith added a second and the MN10 lads looked to be heading for a win. However, some terrific forward play from Andy Thubron and harrying defence from Nick Black prevented MN10 scoring again.

Singling out one player is difficult in such an even game. Great work from Norris, Hallas, Smith and Pitts-Murray had them in with a chance of the honour, but the solid performance in both attack and defence of Tom Rawson gives him Man of the Match this week.

The ill Men 5 Fun Boy 3ers 2

The new side joining the league unfortunately met The Ill Men at the top of their game this evening. Fantastic movement both on and off the ball gave The Ill Men the upper hand from the outset. Rob Mullett was solid at the back and Mark Benson, Ross Jones and John Dobson made run after run patiently looking for, and eventually finding, the space to add to the rising goal tally – the Harlem Globetrotters of futsal!

They fully deserved their 4-0 scoreline at half time, although the Fun Boy 3ers were gaining confidence and pace as the game progressed. The second half saw the fun boy 3ers play some excellent futsal, David Anderson scoring early on and Cameron Davies later adding a second.

Man of the Match could have gone to any one of The Ill Men tonight – Davison for his superb keeping: Mullett for his strength and commanding performance: Jones for his incredible long range shooting: Dobson for adding an extra dimension in the role of pivot or Benson for his tireless running and 2 goals. However, I am going to give the honour to Fun Boy 3ers’ Austen Bamford for a very impressive display in his first competitive futsal game. Bamford and his team mates are clearly going to challenge as they get used to the game.
