Two junior Leeds teams were selected to represent West Yorkshire at the FA National Futsal finals held at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield from 21-23 July, 2006
Futsal is a fast paced, technical five-a-side football game practised by many of the world's leading football players, such as Ronaldinho or Luis Figo, when they were younger. It is the only five-a-side game recognised by FIFA, the international governing body of the sport.
Two junior teams and one senior team competed at the weekend this is how they fared:
Wigton Moor Futsal/Barsa Juniors Under 14s
This team coached by Kevin Barr and also by John Websdale, was matched against teams from across the country and, losing none of their games, were justifiably crowned National Champions. The team benefited from some magnificent saves by goalkeeper, Kieran - however it was the excellent overall team performance that sealed the championships for the boys.
Coach, John Websdale says: "It was a lesson in how football should be played not only on the pitch but off it as well. It was an honour to be part of the team. The boys' behaviour, play and attitude was a lesson for all of us and they can be rightly proud of their achievements."
The team was made up of Bill, Danny C, Dominic (joint captain), Laurence, Ryan (joint captain), Danny M, Jonny, James, Tim, Ben and Kieran.
Wigton Moor Futsal/Barsa Juniors Under 12s
This was the first futsal outing for the under 12s who managed to perform well against tough nationwide opposition and even managed to win one of their matches. They were coached by Kevin Barr assisted by Gren Wilson.
