Notes: William was named as a beneficiary in his uncle William WITT's will.
Occupation
1772 Taylor, of London (will of William WITT, his uncle)
1842 Tailor (marriage of son William to Harriot SHARPE)
1856 Gentleman (marriage of son George to Eliza IVEY)
As well as being a tailor, William WITT was also the Parish Clerk of Newport,
at least during 1795-1796, and probably much longer. This is shown on 2
documents (copies obtained from Winchester Record Office). The first document
is William WITT's statement to
the Consistory Court of Winchester, as party to a complaint against Peter
GEARY, the Newport Minister. The other document is a Petition in support of William
WITT, their Parish Clerk, signed by about 60 Newport inhabitants. It is
assumed that this expression of support was connected to the complaint against
Peter GEARY, the Minister.
Tracing Your Ancestors The A-Z Guide (by Pauline Saul & F C Markwell) says:
"PARISH CLERK. He normally held this position for life; his duties included the
arrangement of baptisms and communions; he rang the church bell and led the
responses at services. For further information read The Parish Clerk by P.H.
Ditchfield, published by Methuen & Co. 1907".
Tracing Your Family Tree (by Jean A Cole & Michael Armstrong) says:
"Each year, a parish council comprised of responsible citizens, and some
rate-paying householders, known as the Vestry, administered parish affairs and
elected officers to carry out their various duties in the parish, all unpaid,
except for the incumbent and the parish clerk". The book also mentions that the
parish clerk was paid a fee [nice one William!] "for the keeping of the
registers".
