Notes: Although named as Alice BENNETT at her 1807 marriage to William
WITT, she was a widow, and it is assumed that BENNETT was probably her previous
husband's name. If so, her maiden name remains unknown. My current
theory is that she was Alice BURRELL, as this would explain why several of her
descendants were given BURRELL as a middle name - and also possibly explain why
her son Charles adopted BURRELL as a middle name by 1864, and then used BURRELL
as his surname from 1871 onwards. It is also possible that Alice married
under her maiden name of BURRELL, and that this was transcribed incorrectly in
Pallot's Marriage Index as BENNETT...
Unsurprisingly, Alice gets an early mention in her son William WITT's
autobiographical "An Account of
His Life". She is not mentioned by name, but as "a tender and good Mother".

[8319] Source: Pallot's Marriage Index, held by the Institute of Heraldic and Genealogical Studies, Canterbury, Kent. Information obtained by Verity Baylis. The original registers of Christchurch Greyfriars have been lost, but fortunately not before Mr. Pallot began his Index. An actual marriage date was not recorded, so we only know the year, and that both William and Alice were both already widowed.
