Notes: When I asked around the family, everyone told me the same story -
that my grandfather (Alfred Henry Hagger) was the eldest of six children, and
that he had 4 sisters (Lydia, Grace, Molly, and Ivy) and one brother (name
unknown), who died young, around Christmas time. My grandfather apparently
didn't like Christmas, especially Christmas trees, because they reminded him of
his young brother's death. Upon searching the baptism register of All Saints
Church, two brothers were discovered, Henry George (born 1894) and Frederick
(born 1899). Copies of their birth certificates confirm that my grandfather
indeed had two brothers.
A search of the GRO deaths index found that Frederick definitely died young,
aged 10 months - not at Christmas, but on 27th November. This would undoubtedly
have spoiled the family's Christmas celebrations that year, but would have been
unlikely to have caused such a trauma to my 10 year-old grandfather, that
Christmas trees still distressed him as an adult.
A further search of the GRO deaths index found that Henry George died on 14th
January 1903 of tubercular meningitis. The 8 year-old Henry George may have
already been ill during Christmas 1902, but if not, he got ill very soon
afterwards. This would have been deeply upsetting to his 13 year-old brother
(my grandfather), and probably explains why Christmas was such a distressing
time for my grandfather in later years.

Approximate year of birth calculated from:
1901 census of Leytonstone, Essex - aged
6, born West Ham, Essex
[63] Source: Baptism register (on microfiche at the Essex Record Office). Baptised as Henry George HAGGER, despite being registered (9 months earlier) as Henry George HAGGAR. For reasons that cannot be guessed at, the baptism register records his birth date as 21st Febuary 1895, instead of 22nd December 1894!
