Approximate year of birth calculated from:
1881 census of Deptford, Kent - aged 23,
born Greenwich, Kent
1891 census of Deptford, Kent - aged 35,
born Greenwich, Kent
1901 census of Deptford, Kent - aged 43,
born Greenwich
[8896] Source: Information supplied by Vera Bailey. The groom was 22, father Robert PATTERSON, Fisherman... and the bride was only 16!
[8894] Notes: Alfred George WEBB & Emily Jane SAUNTER appear not to have married. This was probably due to the circumstances surrounding the death of Emily Jane's late husband Henry J K STOYLES, who had drowned in the Thames. When a person dies through drowning, no death certificate can be issued without a body, and then the spouse has to wait seven years to prove being a widow/widower. It is almost certain that neither Emily Jane, nor her new partner Alfred George WEBB, could have afforded the legal fees to prove she was a widow - so they remained unmarried. Also, following the death of her husband, Emily would probably have been receiving a pension from the docks, which she would have lost if she had married again. This would have been a further disincentive to any marriage plans (information supplied by Vera Bailey)
