Some of the things we have done as a group and as individuals:

 

As a group we have arranged and supported local activities and co-ordinated responses to national campaigns for our individual communities.

 

As individuals we have attended national gatherings and lobbies, lobbied the Government and our MPs and each of us supported some of many different ongoing campaigns.

Some highlights have been:

 

·          We have organised a showing of the Film “The Iron Wall” in July 2007 with a discussion afterwards and encouragement to take actions

·          Helped with Leicester’s 2 day Fairtrade Festival in June 2007

·          Campaigned as part of the World Can’t Wait Rally in London, June 2007

·          Lobbied EU embassies in London in April 2007

·          Travelling to London in September 2006 to persuade the UK Government to withhold funding from the World Bank until it reforms

·         Many of our communities took part in the Global Stand Up Against Poverty

·         Assisting in the Leicester-wide survey for the two Fairtrade Guides

·         We produced a recipe booklet inline with our theme for Fairtrade fortnight 2006: “Baking with Fairtrade”

·         Some of us went to Edinburgh in July 2005 to encourage the G8 leaders to change trade rules once and for all

·         We hosted an evening in Fairtrade Fortnight 2005 with Regina Joseph – a Fairtrade Banana Grower from Dominica, [to read her story follow the link]

·         We helped run a White band Event in Town Hall Square – see the pictures

·         We surveyed our local Supermarkets to see what Fairtrade products they sell, correlated and distributed the results. We then wrote to the Managers

·         We assisted in the running of the Unfair in Town Hall Square in June 2003, where Patricia Hewitt [MP for Leicester West and then Secretary of State for Trade and Industry] had to resort to breaking the rules in order to succeed!

·         We have lobbied several Leicester MPs both in London and in Leicester,

·         We organised and ran Fairtrade sampling sessions in Asda, Oadby during Fairtrade Fortnight in 2003 and 2004

·         We held Fairtrade tasting sessions and birthday parties within our own communities

·         The group supported Stoneygate Baptist Church with their two Fantastic Fairtrade Fashion Shows [click on special events] in 2003 and 2004

·         and we lobbied the South Leicester Christian Partnership to become a Fairtrade partnership
