Road to the touring area much improved although you still have to negotiate a bridge it seems to have been widened, since Julies visit, to accommodate bigger units. We saw plenty of two axel vans and a rather large motor home.

Nice friendly reception and plenty of choice on where to pitch (with electric hook up)

Plenty of water for young children to play in with a couple of small streams and a small pond to use inflatable’s on. I must admit though the streams and pools are not deep I was surprised at the number of very young unsupervised kids wandering about.

Lots of rabbits about early before people start moving about and you can listen to the owls at night.

We didnt get much Noise at night but the site wasnt that busy. I can imagine when the site is full it could be quite noisey. Its a really big site with lots of pitches.

The food at the site pub although expensive was very good. Food isn’t usually served in the garden but the first evening the wife was peckish and had a bowl of soup, we had the dogs with us so they served it in the garden. The soup was top notch, cauliflower . On the second night we had a meal in the pub and it was really good, restaurant standard  rather than pub grub, hence the price. A menu can be found on the Park site here http://www.akebarpark.com/main_menu.html

You can find toilets at the main reception and tucked away behind the fishing lake as well as the main block. The main block has pot washing sinks, toilet and waste water disposal along with showers.

Shower tokens are 30p from reception and the site pub. The toilets where basic and a bit smelly towards the afternoon. They where cleaned at about 07:30 hrs so go early for a shower. We managed easily with just one token per shower, but we don’t tend to hang about.

The site is a good base for touring this part of Yorkshire, with shops in Leyburn  and bedale. The site shop at reception  stocks the usual basic and will order a morning paper if you ask them. They don’t have a pool anymore.

We used the site as a base to tour the local area visiting, Hawes, Asygar falls, Malham, Skipton, Masham, Buckden, Runswick Bay, Whitby and lots of beautiful scenery.

Would I go back again? Yes if I wanted to visit the area again I would use this site, but might give Constable Burton Hall a try next time.

a site half way between bedale and layburn in yorkshire, a large site with only two toilet blocks!!! one at reception with only three cubicles and very little paper the other in the middle of the site again i found it dirty and smelly especially late on a night, they were cleaned and replenished on a morning but by afternoon take your own paper!

you got to pay for a 30p for a shower (token from reception) there is a lake in the middle of the touring part of the camp but its not lit.... beware of falling in wen its dark as there very few lights and what is there are on the electric hook ups and they don't give much light out

unfortunately we were situated next to a couple who argued after there visit to the pub and didn't stop till easy 2am. the next night there was a party in a camper van and that went on just as long and noisy if there's security we never seen them!!

saying that its situated in lovely countryside with easy access to the rest of the county

Akebar is a beautiful site - we arrived out of hours but were greeted by the warden and shown to a good-sized pitch. The loo blocks were clean and of a good size and the shop was well stocked and staffed by friendly people. Our children (David 7 and Gemma 9), were entranced by the amount of local wildlife including friendly ducks and we even saw a kingfisher! There is a lovely stream running through the park and many ponds (two of which are stocked for fishing). The park has plenty of room for kids to play and a good children's play area with 4 new swings and a slide.

We had a lovely meal at the Friars Head pub, just wished we could have stayed for Sunday lunch, but we wanted to visit more of the Dales so missed out...

Next time I am taking my golf clubs to this gem of a site!

Akebar Caravan Park
Bedale

Large site with lots of facilities for both children and adults alike. Opportunities for fishing and golf, even for a quiet meal and a drink many pitches with hook up. Wise to book well in advance for peak periods. Staff both friendly and helpful. Toilet and washroom facilities could do with updating although generally clean. Coin operated showers

A site full of static caravans with a bumpy, unkempt road leading to the caravan/tent field. A large outfit would have trouble getting over the rickety bridge and paintwork scuffed on the bridge proves many have scrapped their vans trying to negotiate it.

Swimming pool on site although it is about a 10 minute walk over a field where you either negotiate past the sheep or if they have gone negotiate the sheep dung! Tiny pool at the end of your trek!

Long steep walk for the caravan field to the shop at the top of the site whilst you try to avoid all the pot holes. The toilets were old fashioned and dirty. The pot cleaning facilities were old and the sinks and tiles were all cracked. The site had a golf course and the bar was full of the
elite (the prices for the food were very expensive although they were probably catering for the more discerning golfer.

On the plus side (!) there is a stream and pond on site and if you dare to feed the ducks they will harass you the whole of your holiday for more!

The scenery is lovely and lots of walks are available to you although we find if you walk on the road you risk getting run down as some roads are pretty narrow.

Great base for visiting Yorkshire which I found to be the only reason we stayed there.

I spent many a weekend there as a child and loved every minute. It's brilliant place for energetic kids to roam free on bikes and in ponds and trickling rivers, exploring the countryside. And yes, you have to walk
through a small field of sheep to get to the pool, but hey! Who minds brushing shoulders with a few sheep. After all you are in the heart of rolling hills and vales!

It's a charming, quaint site. Perfect for getting away from it all. The twisty winding roads, beautiful walks, babbling brooks and idyllic location all add to the fun. There's even the tiniest stone church. In fact it's a brilliant place for all the family! My last Visit was about two years ago

Constable Burton Hall

Directions

Go straight up the A1 to Leeming Bar, turn towards Bedale. At the crossroads at the top of the hill, turn right and follow that road (A684) for 8 miles. You will see the entrance to Constable Burton Hall gardens on your right. Do not take this turning. A hundred yards further is the
entrance to the caravan park, opposite the Wyvill Arms Pub.

Set in the grounds of Constable Burton Hall this quiet site isimmaculately kept. The wardens live in a stone cottage on site and papers/milk can be ordered for collection the morning after. The site is level/sloping so have your levellers ready! The loos are situated in an old deer barn and have dried flowers arrangements and pictures on the wall. The showers are beautifully clean and the toilets are cleaned regularly. There is a building housing a washing machine and dryer and magazines are left for you to read in your caravan and return at your leisure. When we visited in May there was a pheasant roaming the site for food, but in September when we returned it had gone - Glorious 12th(??!!). There is a short dog walk situated behind the grounds and the Wyvill Arms is just over the road. Drinks at the Wyvill are very expensive and I cannot comment on the meals as we did not indulge.

The wardens are very friendly and regularly ride round the grounds
emptying the bins etc.

Nearby attractions: Constable Burton Hall gardens are open for viewing, Leyburn, Bedale, Hawes (try some Wensleydale Cheese made in the Hawes factory), Masham (Black Sheep Brewery), Brymor ice cream parlour (made with cream from Jersey cows - lovely!!)

Final thought - a beautiful well kept site which is a member of the Caravan and Camping Club but can be used by non-members.
We go there at least twice a year and enjoy he countryside and places to visit within a short ride

Highly recommended

The Black Swan Inn

Masham

A quiet scenic site behind the Black Swan Pub. On a slope so be prepared! Close to many beautiful places within Yorkshire. Places we recommend to visit are Leighton Reservoir, Aysgarth Falls, Hawes, Druids Temple( like a mini stone henge!) and of course the village of Masham which holds a small market on a couple of days a week.

The site owner is very pleasant and a warm welcome is guaranteed in the pub,
look for all the bed pans hung up on the ceiling in the lounge.

A great base for exploring the Yorkshire countryside.

Skipsea Sands

Very close to the beach, mainly static for static caravans but nice level pitches for caravans, each separated by sapling trees. Very generous sized pitches. Entry and exit is via a swipe card which we found quite reassuring. Good dog walk but gets a bit muddy after its rained. Rally
field behind the pitches seemed level as well. Nice long seafront walks to be had and close by car to Bridlington and Scarborough. A way further up the coastline is the quaint town of Whitby which we would recommend anyone to visit. In Whitby you can guarantee seeing Goths and vampires walking along the streets coming to pay homage to the supposed landing town of Dracula many years ago!

Skipsea Sands has a large swimming pool, restaurant, bars (one child friendly, one adult only), ten pin bowling allies and pizza takeaway. The toilets were fashioned from portacabins with a wooden fascia to make them look like lodges. There are 2 shower/toilet blocks on the site for
caravanners and the block nearest to our pitch seemed to be the older of the two. The shower curtains had a little mildew on them and the toilets were old. We were assured that the block nearer the bottom edge of the field were newer and cleaner (?) It was very quiet when we went in November but I could imagine in the summer months it would be bustling with people. We found the site to be very windy - but perhaps we chose the wrong week? ;o)
All in all we enjoyed our trip to Skipsea Sands and would recommend it to others.

The camp is clean and well kept.
Only two complaints.

1) Not a dog friendly place, the bar does not have any notices saying "No Dogs".

2) The reception desk is not smiling people type, not even a "Thank you for your visit, have a safe journey".

All in all we did enjoy our stay even though it was only for four nights.

I stayed at this site for a week and had a great time. The kids loved it with the assortment of animals and the park. Lots of walks so no need for the car. Plenty to do in the area for the more energetic as well as the east coast close by.
Highly recommended.

Visited May 10th and 11th 2002

On arrival at the site the first thing which struck our party was the "quaintness" of the setting. Comments were made about its likeness to a "Heartbeat" set. The site is surrounded by hedges (hiding nearby houses) and open fields. The dawn chorus had to be heard to be believed!
The site accommodates tents, touring caravans, RV's and has numerous static caravans.
It is a large site and, I would think, there is little need to book other than at busy times such as Bank Holidays. There are electric hook-ups available.
The facilities were immaculate and very tidily decorated. There are free hot showers, hair driers (20p) and the usual laundry and washing-up facilities.
Perhaps the best feature of the site is the fact that it is situated at the back of the Yorkshire Hussar Inn - a typical country pub serving excellent ale with friendly clients and a cheerful owner. The entrance to the site is through the pub car park.
There is a general store/post office in the village about three quarters of a mile from the site.
We were a party of four in two tents and all agreed that the site was well-worth a further visit for a longer period as this would enable us to explore the beautiful countryside around.
