Situated at Kelvedon Hatch this is a quite and relaxing site and yet only 20 miles away from London.

ReceptionWe had a warm and friendly reception on arrival. The site was full when we arrived (90 pitches) but still gave the impression of plenty of space on the two fields. The field behind the children’s play area tends to slope more than the other field. They have some hard standing for caravans and electric hook-ups.

ToiletThe wash and shower facilities were clean and well maintained with plenty of hot water. There are two sinks for pot washing, under cover, these could get a bit busy at times.

Play GroundThey have a small play ground, a pitch and put and a volley ball net. When we arrived we were asked to tell the kids to play any ball games in this area due to the fact the site was full. This worked well and the kids didn’t mind.

The nearest supermarket is Sainsburys in Brentwood. We didn’t explore the local area as we used this as a base to venture into London. We will use this site again.

The nearest station in the Zone’s areas is Epping. It took us about 20 to 30 mins to get to the station. The car park (£2.00p all day) was full but we asked the attendant where the nearest parking was and instead of directions he managed to squeeze us in a corner. From here it cost us a total of £9.00p for a family of five to travel all 6 zones of London transport (buses and tubes) all day.

Its worth ringing London transport to send information before you go on 0171-222 1234 or visit there web page there is so much to do in London I can’t list it all here. The things we did are listed below.

The Natural History Museum
This kept the kids quite for 3 hours and we only touched on 3 of the galleries.
(the ‘ Left Bag’ alert and fire alarm seemed to add to the kids enjoyment)

Thorpe Park
We visited Thorpe park and to be quite honest the kids were disappointed, so were we. I do not recommend this. For the kids to say they are bored after an hour is very unusual at a theme park. If you want to visit a really good theme park then go to Alton Towers

Madame Tussauds
This keeps us amused every time we go. The kids thought it was great, especially kris who thought a man standing near the exit was a wax works….he wasn’t, you had to be there.

London Zoo
As a Zoo this is ok. We expected more with this being in the Capital. If you go with no expectations then its ok.

The fishing lake(?) is ideal for the children For anyone bigger it may be OK for a relaxing 5 mins. From my point of view it is too close to caravans, and tents for any kind of peace.
They do hold comps there during the season
Site as whole 4/10
Restaurant 9/10
Amenities 4/10
It is alright for an overnighter but not much else.

The Caravan Club Site just on the Lexden side of Colchester is very close to the A12 dual carriageway - on the slip-road in fact. Strangely though this has not been a problem for short visits as you seem to get used to the noise of passing cars.

The Site is compact, has excellent shower blocks and is very close to a park and a small nature reserve (both ideal for exercising my dogs!). The is a small on-site shop with a wide variety of items in small quantities.

Although most visitors to this site would like to explore the old roman town of Camulondunum with the Castle with a tree growing from a turret etc, etc, I find it an excellent place to have some peace & quite (!?) and still visit my family.

Their web site takes bookings by email @ http://www.colchestercamping.co.uk/

The Elms Campsite at Lippitts Hill in Epping Forest is one of the nicest places I have stayed at. The site is small but well organised by the management. The toilet and shower block is great with lots of individual rooms with a shower, sink and toilet in each. Always spotlessly clean too. A small shop with basics on site is also very useful.

The Manager also runs a free shuttle bus to the tube station which is very handy.
