Latest Plans
The developers have submitted a possible building plan for the Coate area for the Local Plan Inquiry in April. They have revealed that the university buildings will be up to 17 metres high on five storeys.
The houses could hug Coate Water's north-east perimeter fence as NO buffer is proposed.
A massive pyramid structure of up to 37.7 metres high is proposed near Junction 15 of the motorway and will be visible for miles. This is taller than the Great Western Hospital that is 26m at its highest point.
Not only will the views of the North Wessex Downs be lost forever from Coate Water, the towering buildings will turn the beautiful country park into an ugly town park.
Equally, the open views from the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty will be ruined.
The developers argue that the hospital won't look so stark and out of place if the rest of the countryside around Coate and Badbury Wick is wrecked! In the actual words of the company, who also promoted the new hospital:
"It is considered that notwithstanding the fact that the immediate landscape of the area will be irrevocably altered, the general visual impact of the development is acceptable and will actually serve to balance and mitigate the stark impact of the Great Western Hospital in the existing landscape."
Update! Planning application submitted.
