Walton Hall Park Carp
A brief look at Walton Hall Park, one of the Liverpool park lakes

Walton Hall Park

Walton Hall Park lake is located in Walton, Liverpool. Fishing is controlled by Liverpool City Council and is free, before you can fish any of the Liverpool park lakes you need a 'parks fishing licence'. These special licences can be obtained free from any Liverpool council 'one stop shop', just be sure to take some 'id' with you.

The lake itself is around 3 acres in size, and has two large islands, one at each end of lake. There is a fence and a tarmac path running all the way around the lake, this makes the use of a rod pod a must. Nobody is sure about the stock of carp in the lake, from my own observations of carp on the surface when its sunny, I would say that there are about 50 carp present, of which 10-12 of these are 20lb+. Most of the fish are commons, with there being only four known mirrors present. One of the mirrors is 20+, the rest of the 20's are commons. I actually managed to catch the biggest fish in walton hall park, a common of 27lb+ and I know this same fish has now topped 30lb. Most of the rest of the fish are doubles, averaging around the 16lb mark. Liverpool council did close down stanley park lake for a while and drained it so I believe the stock of carp in walton hall park may now be bigger than when I fished there.

Walton Hall Park is not the easiest of carp venues, however there is virtually nowhere in Merseyside were you can catch a 27+ common!. This is definitely one of the top venues around for the scouse carper. The fish seemed to be active 2-3 hours before and 2-3 hours after sunrise. This is the quietest time of day in the park, and you'll probably find yourself alone at this time. One tip I can give is to keep all your gear were you can see it. The park is surrounded by housing estates and if you take your eye off your fishing gear you might end up loosing it!.

I found walton hall park to be quite a tricky venue to fish, the carp do show themselves well and I had my best action simply dropping baits in the areas I saw carp rolling. The hardest part of fishing wally park was joe public, other non anglers and dog walkers can be a real pain and I quickly learned to target the water at specific times to keep me sane!. I found that March up until early - mid April where the best times to fish, the carp are waking up after a long winter but its cold enough for the kids to still be playing indoors. Once the weather warms up the kids and public become a real problem and for me it was time to move on. During those 6 weeks from the beginning of March until the middle of April was the time I fished the lake, when that 6 week period was up I'd move back to fishing in Cheshire and go back to walton hall park the next year. I fished a few early springs on the park and I did very well on there for the time I fished with very little mither from the public.

Should you wish to find out more about 'Wally Park', just ask for info in Johnson's Tackle in Rice Lane, its only a mile or so up the road just past Walton Prison and they'll be able to tell you how the lake is fishing and give advice on the current going baits.
