Fens Shaman, some general comments:

Most Shaman of the fensfolk belong to one of the houses that the Shaman have founded over the years. The house acts as a society of colleagues for the Shaman, who are by their calling are set apart from the common folk. The house is where the young shaman finds a mentor to train him, companionship during his life, for true companionship with the common folks from whom he must remain aloof is impossible, and as a master a way to leave a legacy by training the next generation. The houses each have their tenets, and each aims to uphold different matters that need the attention of a Shaman, keeper of the faith and lore of the gods and the people. For more information refer to the treatise on the houses of the Shaman. Most houses also have initiation rites that those who wish to join them must undergo. These tests are not commonly discussed but test the mettle of the would be Shaman and seek to determine if the house they wish to join is really for them or not. The point at which applicants are tested varies, for some a long apprenticeship is called for before the tests, for others the tests are in two stages, a test of character to become an apprentice and a deeper test on application for the status of Shaman at the conclusion of apprenticeship.

The common folks and Shaman:

For the common folk the general rule is that the Shaman are the keepers of the faith. They are to be respected in all things. Those that do poorly by a Shaman, threaten them or worse assault them are unwelcome. The revenge of the more militant houses on those who harm their members is rumoured to be terrible, the stuff of stories to scare the young into behaving themselves. This does not stop some rough times, the fenslands are a rough place and Shaman of many houses are more than willing to get into a decent brawl and look very poorly on those who do not give as good as they get. Exceptions are made but you better be sure that the target of your displeasure is already in trouble or outcast first, and then the rule is that the Shaman prefer to tend to their own business the same as the Jarl’s tend to theirs.
