Introduction

These webpages are a general set of tutorials specifically aimed at the 3d modeller who wants to make aircraft models but doesn't know where to start. I must point out here that I will be assuming that you at least know the basics of 3d modelling in Lightwave.

Any examples given will refer to Lightwave3d Version 6.5 unless I specify otherwise, although I will try to stick to techniques that can be used with 5.6 where I can.

Goals?

I will try to explain some of the more tricky aspects of making & texturing complex aircraft models. I'll try to explain what information you need to know before you turn on the computer. I can't teach anyone how to add detail, or make accurate models, but I can at least give some ideas on how to make a start.

Aircraft modelling is just like any other sort of course, preparation is the key to success, so I'll try to help out there where I can.

Why Aircraft?

I make aircraft models because I am interested in the subject. These beasts come in all shapes, sizes & colours, they are often big, fast mean & sexy. What more can you ask of a subject?

Lessons that you may learn here can be applied to just about any form of vehicle of course. Cars, especially the more modern sporty types share much in common with aircraft. They both tend to be sleek aerodynamic shapes & both have wings (the pun doesn't work unless you are British).
