4th Mansfield Woodhouse (St Edmunds) Scouts :- Formed 13 May 1937
(This is the date registered with The Scout Association, it is understood that scouting has been in Mansfield Woodhouse since just after scouting started in 1908)
Headquarters :- Location:- adjacent to and linked to Turner Hall (Church Hall) this site has been in use by our group for many years. The Group we understand to have been started by the Vicar of the time (This needs further research in the church records)
Building:- The current building is owned by the Group :-
Current stone building was built by the group volunteers around 1992 & opened in 1993
The Building had to be constructed from local Stone, to match in with the pre-existing Turner Hall & Associated buildings.
Since newly quarried stone would be prohibitively expensive. A cheaper source of stone needed to be located. Due to renewals in the local road network, a quantity of local stone curb edge stones were obtained from Ashfield District Council. (Thanks)
These curb stones where cut by hand into pieces suitable to construct the Headquarters in addition the surplus were used to assist the reconstruction of the stable centre.
Most of the funds were raised locally to build the Headquarters. (Pre Lottery thus grants not available).
Our thanks to St Edmunds Church. Sir John Eastwood foundation. Alan Meale (MP) did a sponsored bike ride from the Houses of Parliament (London)
This Scout Hut is Dedicated to the memory of Mark Davies, Mark who died whilst on camp, suffering from an undiagnosed brain tumour.
The Previous building was of wooden construction and was demolished to make way for the current building.
The Wooden Hut was obtained from the disbanding 24th Mansfield group in the mid 1980's. And as is usual, dismantled and moved by volunteers. I have heard a story about the removal.
Apparently the water and electric supplies to the wooden hut had been disconnected prior to removal to our site, as is usual in these cases a certain amount of cutting has to take place. Whilst cutting an electric cable, our resident electrician of the time was thrown across the hut. (Luckily not badly hurt), it turned out the hut had an additional power source from a lamp on the adjacent pavement.
The land occupied by our headquarters is church land, leased for the lifetime of the group at a rent of £0.06 per year.
