New! Oct 29th 2009
A nice e-mail has been received from Sally Reeve about her two girls, Nikki and Samantha.
“We have been very busy this summer and Nikki in particular has had a great season. She has won many Junior classes this season and also done well in the YKC stakes classes, Leeds Championship Show Nikki with Houston had 2nd in JH and then 1st in YKC Handling, Ladies Kennel Ass Newmarket 2nd August 1st JH and 2nd YKC handling, City of Birmingham 5th September 1st JH and 2nd in YKC Stakes qualifying her and Houston for the Crufts Finals. 2nd in the Richmond Semi Finals to Jodi Brutto( they are great friends , most of the champ show results are either of those two 1st or 2nd) we were all very pleased for Jodie and hope to go the Discover Dogs to support her in November. Darlington 19th September 1st YKC Stakes and 1st YKC Handling
Lots of wins at open shows . Samantha has also had a good season but so far the 1st place in YKC Handling has not come her way. She has had many wins in open shows and Best Handler on the day, as you can appreciate there is a lot of rivalry between Sam and Nikki.
Sam has also been handling in the show classes note ably GT Yarmouth and Gorleston Show Sep 27th Sam won JH 12-16 years under Helena Hutchins then Best Handler. Showed in breed class took Best of Breed, then Group 1 in Pastoral so for the first time was in the Best of Breed group, Samantha showed the dog excellently in all classes and I was very proud of her , she has gained a lot of confidence this year and also a lot of respect from senior handlers of whom she is regularly asked to handle their dogs. She will be showing in breed classes and stakes classes next year at Crufts and we are all looking forward to a quieter winter season. I have attached a couple of pics could you update the girls pages. When you back on them I can't belive how quick both have grown up. Kind Regards Sally Reeve”.

Ex-junior, handling trainer and Champdog’s extraordinarre, Roxanne McDonald, wants to let everyone know about some of her recent proteges successes. 17 year old Yolander Parker won Best Adult Handler at Milton Keynes and DCS, beating her trainer, Ray McDonald! Now, I would have loved to have been there to see Ray’s face – ha ha. Just goes to show though, how excellent training pays off! Yolander also took the McDonald’s irish red and white setter, Bree, (Courtdown Summer Breeze over Roanjora, owned by Mr RG, Mrs AD & Miss R McDonald) to BOB. Another handler that the McDonalds have spent time training is 16 year old Emily Tripp. At the same show, Emma came 2nd in the 12-16 years JHA class and showed irish red and white setter, Moya (Spyefire Flamenco for Roanjora owned by Mrs RG & Mrs AD McDonald) to RBOB. Roxanne has one final ‘shout-out’ and that goes to 6 year old Abigail Levene who took best Junior Handler at the Parson Russell Terrier Club show which meant she has qualified for Richmond. According to Roxanne, young Abigail was ‘over the moon’, as where her parents and trainers (Rox and Ray).

19 year old Lauren Perfitt, from Huddersfield has been in touch with some news about the family’s success in handling and breed showing.
She writes: “My sister, Zoe Perfitt, who is 12, won JHA 12 - 16 Years at North West Open Show (04.05.2009). She was handling a Bouvier des Flandres "Eva" - Luik Eva The Diva, who she co-owns. At Blackpool Championship Show, she handled Eva and won Best Puppy in Breed with her! At Leeds Championship Show, she won the YKC 12 - 16 Years, handling our friends, Mrs L Brown's Australian Shepherd "Murphy" - IR CH Accra Bayliss Inaspin ShCM, so this qualified her for the handling finals at Crufts 2010. At Bakewell Premier Open Show (06.08.2009), she handled Murphy again, winning the JHA 12 - 16 Years class. And finally last month, at Alfreton & District Open Show, she handled Eva, winning Best Puppy in Breed and Best of Breed.” Excellent results for Zoe – keep it up.
Lauren also mentioned a few wins about herself. She continues: “At Honley Show, I handled "Tova" - Chayo Canadian Dream for Samjoe and won Best Any Variety Working NSC and then went on to win Working Group 4. At Wombwell Open Show I handled Tova again, winning Best of Breed and Working Group 4. At Leeds Championship Show, I handled Tova in the YKC 17- 24 years and won, I couldn't believe it. It qualified me for Crufts.” Excellent news, thanks Lauren.

Some breed news in from National Gundog where 14 year old James Newton from Grimsby had possibly the most memorable day a dogshower could ever have. He won his first CC handling a Chesapeake Bay Retriever. James has only bee handling for just under one year. He handled Am/Can Ch Silvercreek Mad About You for Chesepi (IMP USA), an eight and half year old Chesapeake Bay Retriever bitch owned by Molly Barker. This was Jamie's second CC and her first Championship Show BOB in the UK. This was also the first time that James has handled that particular dog.

13 year old Katie Stewart has been enjoying a lot of handling success this year. She won the 12-16 year age group YKC handling class at Birmingham National in May under me handling a cream Labrador called Amber. Also in May, Katie also won Best Junior Handler at a Labrador breed club show. Last month, the pair competed at their local ringcraft club’s handling match and Katie was thrilled to win Best Handler in Match, beating the adult handler. The judge was Lucinda Carter who was YKC National handler of the Year in 2007. Well done Katie and Amber.

Mandi Ellis wishes to highlight her daughter’s fantastic success at the recent European Show. She says: “I would like to congratulate my daughter Sophie Ellis on her latest junior handling win. Recently, she went over to Ireland to compete at the European Winners Show, where she won her age group, handling a Japanese Akita Inu called Kita. Although she now regularly handles Japanese Akita Inus, it was the first time she had actually handled this dog.
“Once the judge had shortlisted the class they were asked to swap dogs and Sophie was given the Siberian Husky, a breed she hadn't handled before. I would like to say how proud I am of her and also to say thank you to her from Kita's owners Cherry Wilkinson and Maureen Thompson. Thanks Mandi.”
Many congrats Sophie - what a superb result - well done!

Many thanks to a kind e-mail from Esme Saunderson from Elgin, Scotland. She says: “I just want to thank you for the invaluable book that you have written. I bought it for my daughter Becky and she has read it over and over again and it seems to have paid off.
“Becky handles her own Golden Retriever puppy, Whisper and at their first Champ show at SKC in May they won the 12-16 year old JHA class and thus qualifies them for Richmond and Crufts 2010. For someone who only started 18 months ago and has only been showing her dog for 6 months I think this is great. She was placed 4th in the YKC at the same show and the judge's feedback was that she had picked her out when they entered the ring to win but she had fluffed it but couldn't remember how. Not really helpful but fair enough. We are looking forward to Richmond and the pressure is off slightly now so I am hoping she will just enter the ring with out the nerves and have fun.“Thanks again.”

June 6 2009
Some lovely news has reached me from 9 year old Jessica Horler: “Hi Marina - just wanted to share what a great bank holiday weekend we had.
On Saturday I was at the Hop Farm County Fair where my mum was competing at agility. I have been training with Connor too and they had a special class which Mum entered me in for some fun. Although we didn't go clear and got eliminated in both I really enjoyed 'competing' and in the agility special class Connor almost went clear but he saw Mum and my sister out the ring and decided to try and say hello and then back jumped a jump. But I was so pleased with the rest of the course.
Then on Monday we were at the South of England Agricultural open show. I handled Connor in the breed class and got 3rd. But the best bit was the handling where its my best ever handling show and I will remember for a very long time. John Allen was judging and I won the 6-11 class with Connor who went lovely as always for me (my sister got 2nd with a spinone). I then won Best Junior Handler for the day which I was so pleased with as Charlotte Dalgarno was the winner of the 12-16 class and she is a really good handler. Connor was so good for me again.
This show is over two days so I was then asked to compete for Best Junior Handler in Show - I was against the winner from the previous day. I was very nervous but remembered to check the judges position on entering - Connor was a bit naughty in the initial stack and wouldn't stand still but I won! I was so pleased and my Mum was really proud - I ran to give her a big hug after.
I am so lucky to have Connor to handle as he is such a lovely dog to take in and always does his best for me - he got a big sausage treat in his tea that night.”

Rachel Horler’s young daughters have been enjoying the Spring sunshine and winning well. She writes: “At Sutton and DCS, Jess got 1st and Emily 2nd in 6-11years class. Both listened to Gary Upton’s (judge) instructions of a reverse triangle! Jess also at the same show took our own Connor (Aldabrook Morning Glory at Rackens) in the breed class and got 1st in Post graduate with him.
Then a week later at Tunbridge Wells Jess again won the 6-11years class with Connor and Emily 2nd place - Jess went in for BJH and did fantastic but the older girl won.
2009 is continuing to be a good year for both the girls and Emily hopefully has a more permanent dog to handle albeit borrowed still! Who knows she may beat her sister soon! Both Emily and Jess are really enjoying the shows and have made many friends.” keep going girls and many congrats on your wins.

I also took Wendy Holmes' bitch Lisjovia Airwaves Lavia "Lavia" (Alys' litter sister) into special yearling bitch and came 2nd, it was Also Lavias first time at Crufts, unfortunately I missed the handling because it clashed but it was worth it.”

Many congratulations to Morven MacDonald who did Scotland proud at Crufts in the handling competitions. Her mum Fiona proudly writes: “Morven MacDonald and her 16 month old beagle Zoe ( Newlin Zoe of Finmorlan ) won the 6-11year YKC Terrier and Hound Handling class out of a class of 12. They had also qualified for the YKC National Show Handler of the Year on the Sunday. In this case the ten under 12's from Scotland,England, Ireland & Wales competed and under a different judge Morven and Zoe won the 6-11year class again. They were then up against the winners of the 12-16 & 17-24 yrs and came 3rd. Morven began handling just over 3 years ago so we are absolutely delighted and so proud of her.”

Roxanne McDonald has e-mailed me to let me know about Stevenage juniors success at Crufts. She said: “
Jessica Andrews and her Toller Toffee (Fallowfen Foxy Vixen) came 2nd in gundog 6-11. Crufts was only her 4th Show. Only having her first handling competition at Discover dogs in November, where she borrowed Yolander Parker’s Lab Cross, Lucy to win her age group, she then went on to win her JHA class at Mid Herts gundog and 4th at Luton with Toffee. She had a fantastic time at Crufts and hopes to qualify for the handling again for 2010 and also qualify Toffee for the breed class.
Yolander Parker also came 5th in Gundog handling 12-16, again her first time at Crufts in the handling, showing Lucy.
Not forgetting between me and Dad, we had some fantastic breed results including in Red and whites setters, 1st Post Grad dog and 1st Limit bitch, 4th Veteran Bitch and 1st & 3rd in Good citizen bitch. And in Tollers I handled a friends puppy to Best Puppy in Breed.
Lewis MacKnight with his first Sharpei, Spooky (MIJUJO WA'TER PALAVA) also had fantastic results in the breed with 2nd Puppy Dog and 1st Junior Dog. Spooky is also his first show dog and there first time at Crufts.
Stevenage Ringcraft YKC Handling Crufts qualifiers included; Emma Tripp, Jessica Andrews, Joseph Mcdonald, Yolander Parker and myself. Well done everyone for getting there.
Fantastic time held by all I think.” Excellent results Rox, thanks for letting us all know.

More news is trickling in from Crufts 2009. I have had a lovely e-mail from Sam Bull from the Isle of Wight to explain exactly how her show dog team got on. She writes: “
“My Daz (STARVON GOLDFINGER AT SHAMELVAL SH CM - 7yrs old) got third in Open Dog against 9 foreign and english Champions - which I was very pleased with. In YKC Handling 17-24yrs - I got 5th with Daz. Daisy (BONVIVANT INTENDU WITH STONEDRAGON - 5yrs old) didnt get placed in Open Bitch, Vienna (BONVIVANT NONPAREIL WITH STONEDRAGON - 3yrs old) won Limit bitch out of 7, then won the Bitch CC and then beat her brother who had been made up on the day and became Best of Breed.I was so pleased with her as she was such a star!!
It was exciting to be in the main ring as I have been in there once before in 2007 for the breeders stakes with the Malinois, but to be in there with my mums dog made me feel very proud, that I was able to do the dog justice and show her to my best ability.
We had been up since 2.30am on the Sunday morning and didnt get home until 3am monday morning!! it was a tiring day but totally worth it!!”
Thanks for sharing your news Sam - a Crufts you will never forget me thinks!

Even more junior news from Crufts! Thanks to all your messages on e-mail (marina@juniorhandling.co.uk) and facebook. Remember to send me pictures of your wins at Crufts.
17 year old Fiona Mycroft has been in touch with news from Crufts and she said: “On Thursday 5th March, Terrier and Hound day, I won my 17-24 years YKC Handling Class (1st time in the 'older' group at Crufts) and then me and Peppa (Supeta's Bootilicious Babe) also went on to win the YKC Hound Stakes and qualified for the finals on Sunday. I can’t believe how big that ring is and how much the crowds show their support! It was crazy. Even though we didn’t win, I was so pleased to have gotten into the BIS ring because I may never get another chance again and Peppa really enjoyed being under the spotlights.” That must have been amazing Fiona - very well done.
Danielle Skinner had a great first experience of Crufts. She writes: “I went in the handling class but didn’t get placed, but had a great time and a big well done to Charlotte Page. Also, in the japanese shiba inu ring, I won first in puppy dog, as I handled a dog for a shiba breeder, it was a totally excellent day.” Great to hear you had a good time Danielle.
Beth Holmes also had a great Crufts. She was placed 3rd in puppy with her Manchester Terrier (Spike). In YKC handling 12-16 years Hound and Terrier, she was placed 4th with her Whippet (Hannah). Great results Beth.

More junior news from Crufts!
An excellent breed win came in the form of 14 year old Dom Santoriello and his miniature pinscher ‘Dexter’ (Ch Hillspan Juggernaut For Noiratan ShCM), winning the RDCC. Dom made up Dexter into his first champion in 2008. What a way to start 2009 - many congrats Dom.
Sally Reeve has been in touch about her daughter Sam’s success. She writes: “She was in the 12-16 year old YKC Pastoral and Working handling class with Houston her Australian Shepherd Dog. She turned 12 at Christmas so she was very nervous of competing in the older age group, what can I say, I have never seen Sam show and handling so well. They were a great team on the day and she must have taken in all of your advice from the latest training day a couple of weeks ago. There were 16 in the class including alot of top handlers. She put on a fantastic show and went onto win the class. We are all so very proud of her and she is still on cloud nine.”
Another unexpected win came from Shannon Roberts who tells me she was ‘shocked’ to win the YKC 17-24 years handling class on day 2. It was Shannon’s second time competing at Crufts and the first time in the ‘older’ age group. Shannon was handling her Chinese crested ‘Pazazz Tamarind Showstoper with Pappishan’ (Lacie). Nice work Shannon.
Emily Heath was thrilled to win 3rd place in the YKC handling Toy and Utilty class on day 2 with her tibetan terrier, Araki Whoopie Goldberg. Congrats Emily.
Hannah Hadfield was pleased to come 4th in the YKC Gundog handling class, using a Bracco Italiano instead of her usual dobermann. Good going Hannah. The winner of the Gundog handling class was 17 year old Amy Balch with her weimeraner, who was last year’s National Show Handler of the Year - so continuing great results there, well done.
Georgina Ferguson continues to reap success in the handling classes at Crufts by winning the YKC 12-16 years Terrier and Hound class on day one, handling an Australian terrier. This was George’s last time competing in the 12-16 years class. Georgina also went onto win her age group in the National Show Handler of the Year and go on to win the competition overall. What a very successful Crufts, Georgie!
Helen Taylor from Grimsby let me know that her dog Indijazz Hullabaloo came 2nd out of a massive entry of 54 in the Gamekeepers AV HPR class. Now that was an excellent placing in such a huge class.
Young Antonia Leech took away 2 x VHC’s in the handling (YKC Working and Pastoral 6-11 years) and YKC Pastoral stakes (out of 16 entries) with her bearded collie ‘Mabel’. However, since then, the Southern Counties Bearded Collie Club has given Antonia the award of ‘Young Personality of the Year 2008’ following her handling successes last year and being such a good ambassador for the breed. Wow, surely that’s better than winning Best in Show at Crufts. many congratulations Antonia on this fabulous award.
Another youngster, 11 year old Jade Pascoe (pic left) has been in touch, with her Crufts news, she says: “I had a great time at Crufts. On Friday (day 2), I competed with my Lowchen, ‘Milly’, in the YKC handling finals and we were placed fifth. I was really pleased as Milly is only 13 months old. Sshe was quite scared by all the noise and didnt show too well, but it was a good test for me. Unfortunately, I missed her breed class as they clashed. I showed my Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Nelson, in his breed class and won 1st, I was so pleased!
On Sunday, Milly and I competed in the National Show Handler of the year finals, 6 - 11 years class. I had spent a lot of time getting her used to the noise and people in the morning and she went much better, but still a little nervous. I was so pleased to be placed third. I had such a great time and enjoyed everything.”
12 year old Katie Stewart was awarded 6th in the YKC handling 12-16 years Gundog class and her mum tells me that this was the first time Katie was competing in the older age group and the first time with a different labrador, Amber. It appears that Katie was the youngest handler to be placed in this class, so very well done!
Crufts was worth the wait and trip for 11 year old Erin Logie (right pic) from Angus in Scotland who had possibly the busiest Crufts ever, out of every single person there! Her mum, Nicky tells me that Erin and her large munsterlander ‘Paws’ (Franorst Paws For Eirinn) won the 6 - 11 YKC Gundog handling class. Erin and her working sheepdog, Ace (Ace w' the black 'n' white face) won the YKC Heelwork to music Freestyle. Erin groomed a jrt cross in the grooming competition and came 2nd. She showed Paws in the breed class and got 3rd. Erin was also in a Scottish YKC team for agility and they came 6th. On Thursday (day one), she and her little dog Buzz competed in the YKC agility dog of the year and came 2nd in their height category which meant they had qualified to run in the main arena final at night. Buzz was brill and ended up 7th overall. Good gracious - what a Crufts Erin - well done to you and all your dogs.
And finally, Charlotte Norridge, from Gloucester had another successful Crufts after only handling for a few years. She came 3rd in YKC 6-11 years Hound and Terrier handling class, and then took VHC with her beagle Harry in Graduate Dog (out of 14 entries), so an excellent day for her!

News from Crufts!
15-year-old Charlotte Page from Cambridgeshire won the 12-16 years Toy and Utility handling class with her dalmatian - Winflash Harvey Wallbanger - “Harvey”. Later the same day (day 2), she had qualified three of her dalmatians in the YKC Utility stakes final and came 5th with Harvey. Well done Charlotte!
On day 4, 10-year-old Callum Harris from Bristol won the 6-11 years Working and Pastoral handling class, handling the family’s alaskan malamute. Callum also came 2nd in the National handling finals on the same afternoon. Excellent news Callum!
Some superb breed news from ex junior, 18-year-old Sam Bull, from the Isle of Wight. She handled her Belgian Shepherd Dog (Malinois), Vienna to the Bitch CC (her first) and BOB! Huge congratulations Sam. She also had more success with Daz, the Swedish valhund - geting 3rd out of 10 in open dog, and then Sam came 5th out of 19 in the YKC 17-24 years Working and Pastoral handlind class. What a great Crufts Sam!

Jessica and Emily Horler have enjoyed great success in the handling ring so far in 2009.
Jessica, aged 9 qualified for Crufts 2010 in her first handling class of the year at Worthing & DCS in the YKC 6-11 years class under Roxanne Macdonald where she came 1st. Her sister, Emily, aged 11, won a 3rd place. At the same show, in the JHA class, under Jackie Hornby, another good result saw Jess getting 2nd and Emily 4th. Jess was handling the families young Gordon Setter ‘Aldabrook Morning Glory at Rackens’, Connor, and Emily handled a Hungarian Vizla for the YKC and GSP for the JHA classes.
At Horley open show a couple of weeks later - Jess had another great result, getting 1st in the JHA 6-11 again with Connor and Emily this time handling a Pointer got 3rd. Jess was only beaten for Best Junior Handler by Hollie Kavanagh (The UK’s current Junior Handler of the year) with her Dobermann but according to her mum - she coped really well in the challenge. The judge was Kirsy Miller. Well done girls - keep it up!

Huge apologies to all visitors and junior handlers for the lack of updates since October. Unfortunately I have had major issues with my internet provider and ftp software so was unable to fix the problem easily. However, all seems to be up and running again so please continue to e-mail me at marina@juniorhandling.co.uk with all your news and updates.
I’ve really missed updating the website so I wish you all a Happy New Year and good luck in 2009!
Marina

Well done to Glenn Forbes from Scotland who has been showing for 18 months.
At the end of 2008, he won a 6-11 years class at a local show. He almost qualified for the Scottish Junior Handler of the Year finals when he came 2nd at Perthshire Open show too.

11 year old Samantha Reeve from Norfolk has been having a whale of a time over in the states. She won the 8-11 years Junior Showman and was overall Reserve Best Junior Handler in Show at the US Australian Shepherd Dog Finals in Las Vegas. Among her prizes – a personalised laser carved/hand crafted shield. Now, that has to get a shelf all to itself. Samantha has kindly written this for Our Dogs Juniors: “I had a great time at the nationals it was huge, lots of walking, up early to wash Turbo. I met lots of new people, make new friends and all the other children were very helpful to me. It was very strange showing in the area's, Turbo was a dream and we had a blast.
I was very pleased with my results, mum said we were going to just enjoy the Nationals and meet lots of people, and not to expect any ribbons. We had a shock, I could not believe I got to the Best Junior Handler finals. And then to take Reserve was fantastic. I also got to show another dog at the show for a lady from Texas, she had four dogs in one class so she asked if I could show one for her, that was great. The place was out of this world so BIG. I loved it and would go back tomorrow, loved the weather and all the other things going on. It seemed very strange to be at a dog show for more than a couple of days, it was great to see all the other things being done with the Aussie's. We watched the herding with ducks, sheep and cows. The obedience and the agility. It was great fun the dogs love it. I attended a workshop for the juniors , this was great and I got to know the other handlers. Everyone made us feel very welcome . I also loved the shopping not only at the dog show but outside the venue. The only negative thing was we had to leave Turbo there, he is now home with his US owner we miss him a lot but is not far away as we keep in-touch by email.”
Wow, that sounded amazing, not many 11-year-olds can say they’ve been abroad to show, let along Las Vegas!
