JOSEPH MCDONALD, 18 YEARS OLD

DISTRICT/COUNTY WHERE YOU LIVE: Letchworth, Hertfordshire

HOW DID YOU START OFF JUNIOR HANDLING?

I started off training with my nan and granddads boxers when I was 5, soon after I was entered into a companion show, which I think I was thrown out of, I was upset as it was my first time lol, but things progressed as I grow older.

DO YOU TAKE PART IN ANY OTHER DOGGY ACTIVITIES (OBEDIENCE,AGILITY,FLYBALL,ETC)?

I have competed in Flyball at Crufts

HOW MANY DOGS DO YOU LIVE WITH,OWN AND/OR SHOW?

Currently have 6 Irish Red and white setters at home, and show my Nan and Granddads 3 Australian shepherds, I also show a field spaniel call ‘homer’ for a lady.

WHICH ONES DO YOU USE FOR JUNIOR HANDLING?

I use Masie, Moya (Red and White Irish Setters), Rhea, or Miss T (Australian Shepherds)

WHAT BREEDS HAVE YOU SHOWN BEFORE IN COMPETITION? Red and white setters, Irish Red Setters, Whippet, Australian shepherds, rough collie, boxers, GSP, EES, WSP, Golden retriver, Border Terrier, Tibetan spaniel, and many more.

TELL US ABOUT HOW TO HANDLE (SHOWING STYLE) YOUR BREED IN JUNIOR HANDLING CLASSES?

An Irish Red and White Setter is a stacked breed where the head and tail are held out. They move with both elegance and drive which means speed is needed to show a correct moving dog.

The Australian Shepherd is similar in movement but is free stood. They can be stacked and their heads held.

WHAT DO YOU NORMALLY WEAR IN COMPETITION?

What I wear at a show all depends on the dogs I am showing, if it’s just the Red and whites then I will most likely wear my black or navy suit, but if I’m showing the Australian shepherds or the field spaniel then I will wear my lighter suit just so I do not clash with the dog.

WHAT ARE YOUR BEST ACHIEVEMENTS?

Winning Crufts in 2007 and 2008 in YKC handling 12-16 and 17-24.

IF YOU ONLY HAD ONE 'TOP TIP' TO SHARE, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

Always remember to enjoy yourself and smile, if your happy then your dog it going to be happy.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE THING ABOUT JUNIOR HANDLING? Meeting New ppl and making new friends

WHAT DISAPPOINTS YOU IN THE WORLD OF JUNIOR HANDLING?

When people just go out for the winning and don’t like it when there beaten. The thing with showing is to enjoy it, Also when you have judges that don’t know what to do in the handling.

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU WANT TO BRING UP?

Just remember to have fun and smile,
