JOANNE RAMSHAW, 17 YEARS OLD
DISTRICT/COUNTY WHERE YOU LIVE: Houghton-le-Spring, Tyne and Wear
HOW DID YOU START OFF JUNIOR HANDLING?
I started competing in junior handling classes at my first ever dog show with my first ever dog, who is a Beagle called Bailey, in 2006. When I won this class I was instantly hooked and loved the 'show' atmosphere.
DO YOU TAKE PART IN ANY OTHER DOGGY ACTIVITIES (OBEDIENCE,AGILITY,FLYBALL,ETC)?
Unfortunately not but I would love to try agility with my Beagle, although I know he wouldn't share my enthusiasm and would find smelling the ground much more interesting!
HOW MANY DOGS DO YOU LIVE WITH,OWN AND/OR SHOW?
Just one as my Dad thinks one is enough! He is a Beagle called Bailey (Balderstone Burberry)
WHICH ONES DO YOU USE FOR JUNIOR HANDLING AND WHY?
I don't have a choice as I only have one to choose from. Bailey the Beagle!
WHAT BREEDS HAVE YOU SHOWN BEFORE IN COMPETITION?
Beagles! I concentrate on my own dog, although I have occasionally shown my friends Beagle.
TELL US ABOUT HOW TO HANDLE (SHOWING STYLE) YOUR BREED IN JUNIOR HANDLING CLASSES?
The Beagle is a table dog, which means that they are stacked on the table in the show ring, and the head must be held up slightly and the tail upright. When moving off I always ensure that the collar is at the top of the head to reduce the chance of the dogs head moving graually down to the groud. (Which Beagles are known to do) I have also found that the Beagle looks its best when moving quite quickly around the ring so I tend to jog slowly.
WHAT DO YOU NORMALLY WEAR IN COMPETITION?
I normally wear a dark grey trouser suit with a smart shirt and comfortable flat shoes.
WHAT ARE YOUR BEST ACHIEVEMENTS?
Winning my first ever Junior Handling class in which I qualified for Crufts! Another achievement was qualifying my Beagle for Crufts 2007 and recently qualifying for Crufts 2008!
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST MEMORABLE OCCASION SO FAR?
Crufts 2007 as the atmosphere was amazing and just being there was an achievement.
IF YOU ONLY HAD ONE 'TOP TIP' TO SHARE, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
It's the taking part that counts, winning is a bonus!!
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE THING ABOUT JUNIOR HANDLING?
Meeting new people who grow to become good friends.
WHAT DISAPPOINTS YOU IN THE WORLD OF JUNIOR HANDLING?
The disappointment when you know that the dogs have been judged and not the way they have been handled!
IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU WANT TO BRING UP?
Have fun! You are taking the best dog home, whether they win or not.
