    Dear Friend,

    IOC Evaluation Committee Visit

I had the honour of being given the opportunity to meet with and be given a minute to address the Committee on Thursday. I addressed them at the Euro Terminal in Stratford. As well as the IOC Evaluation Committee were Steve Redgrave, Matthew Pinsett (they are giants!), Seb Coe and Ken Livingstone. My speech focussed on why Waltham Forest is supporting the 2012 bid.

The South African member of the Evaluation Committee has some history with Waltham Forest and L'stone. Apparently he was exiled here during the apartheid years and he lived and taught in a Leytonstone school! Unfortunately I couldn't identify which school. If anyone knows?

On the whole the visit appears to have gone very, very well.

From a pure Waltham Forest perspective it was good to get the announcement this week that the Velo Park will be built regardless of whether we get the Olympics, at the Eastway site. This will be a major national and international facility for all levels and types of those who use 2 wheels and pedals!

    The Clock on Independent Buildings

A resident approached me some weeks ago about trying to get this clock, which faces the tube entrance, working again. As a result the Council is in discussions with the owners of the building and the lease holder, to get a positive outcome. Fingers crossed but its looking good.

    Safer Neighbourhood Police

I'm meeting with our new dedicated Leytonstone Police Force on Thursday, for a tour of the ward, to bring to their attention areas which I already know are of concern to residents. If you have areas of concern or have issues you want me to bring to their attention during this meeting and tour, then please e- mail me by Wednesday pm.

Having spoken to a number of residents and shop keepers over the past couple of weeks, since the roll out of the Leytonstone Safer Neighbourhood Police Team, it is clear that they are already building confidence and the visability of neighbourhood police is making a difference.

Mornington Road and Harvey Road E11 – contravention of one-way streets

The problem of vehicles being driven through Mornington Road and Harvey Road in contravention of the one-way restriction has been occurring for a number of years now. Being a moving vehicle offence it requires a police officer to enforce the one-way restriction. I have asked the Council to report this problem to the police on a number of occasions but I've been informed that the police did not have sufficient resources to carry out enforcement in this case. I requested that the Council therefore improve the situation by altering the physical layout of the roads and to try to make the one-way system self-enforcing.

Before carrying out any work the Council monitored traffic flows in Harvey Road. This showed that on average over 80 vehicles per day contravened the one-way restriction. The physical layout of the Harvey Road and Woodville Road junctions with Mornington Road were then narrowed using temporary barriers.Once these barriers had been put in place traffic flows were monitored again. This showed that the flow of vehicles contravening the one-way restriction had reduced to just over 40 per day. Although the temporary barriers had proved effective they were unsightly. The current works will replace the temporary barriers with permanent materials. The determined driver will still be able to contravene the one-way restrictions but the works have reduced the numbers and this should improve road safety.

I shall also asking be asking the police when I meet them on Thursday to see if they could now undertake some enforcement every now and then.

    Leytonstone Bike Shed

The long awaited covered and high tech Bike Shed is shortly to be constructed in the area of the tube station. They should hopefully be on site in the first week of March. The shed is funded by Transport for London and will be similar to the successful shed at Walthamstow Central.

    CCTV for Leytonstone

I finally signed off the budget for 2 CCTV for Leytonstone Town Centre, this week. I'm sure you will agree these are long overdue, but are a welcome addition in the fight against crime and anti social behaviour in Leytonstone along with the drinking ban, the street wardens and the Safer Neighbourhood Police.

    Bulbs

I'm starting to see bulbs come up and in particular you can't miss them in the Church Yard.

    Half Term Football Sessions

Waltham Forest and Newham have just received £300k for a joint Sports Action Zone. I had the opportunity to receive the cheque on Thursday, at Drapers Field, where hundreds of young people were taking part in half term football training. I couldn't resist having a kick about with the young people in attendance, so prepare yourself for the pictures of me in shirt and tie, getting tackled and dribbled around by the Boroughs young people! But the FA Cup was in attendance and I got to hold it above my head.................

probably closer than the O's have ever got!

    ....and over to you......

Do you get the Councils magazine, 'wfm' every month? Is it any good? Whats missing from it?

Thank you for your comments on the web site. On the whole the feedback was that it needs updating asap.

Didn't have many comments on the library, so if you do have any complaints or any ideas then please let me know.

Don't forget if you have any friends or neighbours in Leytonstone that would like to recieve this report, then please get them to contact me.

    Have a good week.

    Cheers

    Clyde
