It is a requirement of the BOF Map Rules to show a scale bar.

A simple scale bar illustrating the distance between the magnetic north lines is the most effective. It is nice if you can line up the scale bar to fit the north lines.

It was a passing fashion to fill the a 500m scale bar's five segments with the five principal colours. It is now more common to use a separate colour wheel.
