1851 Census - Gloucestershire

Here are the census data for the Forest of Dean Grindles & variants. It is split into three sections; the East Dean, West Dean and all others. The distinction between East and West Dean is something which Slowhands has identified in his research, (and the information from those areas is supplied by him). There are 45 individuals in the East Dean Cluster, and 46 in West Dean! The oldest is Mary aged 90, but unfortunately this doesn't tell us much as she almost certainly married into the family. The older generation of male Grindals are, in the East Dean group Philip (63) born in Hinders Lane (in East Dean), and in West Dean John (66) born in Coleford. After them there is Thomas the sawyer (55) born in Goodrich, and William (52) and Michael (47), both born in English Bicknor (all three in the West Dean cluster). In Coleford we find Thomas (67) born in Newland (to the west of West Dean), in St Briavels is James (66), also born in Newland, and there is a Henry (58) also born in Newland, but it is not clear if he is a Grindell or Grinden. Mary (90), probably the widow of an earlier generation, is also in West Dean, and taken all together this spread seems to imply an origin in the west of the area.
