| Of the many
souvenirs that could be taken home from a visit to Witney one was
crested china. Goss is the most well known manufacturer although there
were others such as Arcadian, Grafton, Rita etc.
Percy R. Cadel of 13 Market Square (now the Nationwide Building Society) owned one of the shops selling such items as well as being a toy shop, a library and a publisher of picture postcards. Malcolm Henderson Collection. |

| This
card (top) shows Tarrant's warehouse after a fire which broke out on June 22nd
1911, Coronation day of King George V. The building was on the corner of
Corn Street and Market Square, a site now occupied by the Sue Ryder
charity shop and a café wine bar. The message on the back of the card, sent to Flo Hawkes of
18 The Crofts, Corn Street, reads as follows:
Dear Flo, This is a P.C. of Mr Tarrant's place, as you will soon see it don't look so bad from outside as it is inside. I didn't see the fire at all, I enjoyed myself at the Coronation, pity it was so rough wasn't it. Yours etc Lil. The writer then goes on to add: All the people were watching the Coronation Bonfire down the Leys when the fire started & no one was at home then the alarm was given & all the thousands came rushing up from (the) Leys. Witney were out all night, Oxford Fire Brigade got here in 3 qrs of (an) hour, Mother and I went all over it Sat. Malcolm Henderson Collection. |
