BURWELL FARM

(A SELECT RESIDENTIAL DEVELOPMENT)

Burwell Farm was a mixed dairy farm comprising of 151 acres of first-class agricultural land, substantial buildings and three cottages, in 1931 it was being farmed by Frank A. List. It was put up for auction at the Fleece Hotel, Church Green on Thursday, 20th September, 1956 at 3 p.m.  The property was strongly recommended as a sound dairy and mixed farm and had been farmed in the past three years with excellent financial results. However, Burwell's farming days were numbered and by the end of the 1960s much of it was covered by semi-detached housing built by Abbey Homesteads Ltd.  Abbey Road derives it's name from this development company. Below, left, is the Farmhouse in 1956 from the front of the auction catalogue and right, the Great Barn and some of the outbuildings. Malcolm Henderson Collection.

The Elizabethan farmhouse is still occupied today as are two of the three cottages, below, left. Unfortunately the "substantial buildings" have all been cleared away except for the timber built granary supported on staddle stones and the third cottage is currently empty. Below, right. Burwell Cottages

Burwell Cottage

On the night of Wednesday May 10th 2006 a fire broke out in the empty cottage next to Burwell farmhouse. This picture taken the following day shows the extensive damaged caused to the roof and upper floor. Malcolm Henderson.

Burwell Shops This is an early picture of the Burwell Farm Shopping Precinct taken in the early 1970s. The trees have just been planted and on the left Burwell Court has yet to be built and is still an area of rough ground. Brendan and Ruth McCartney.
