The nightmare client…
a cautionary tale.
I am, these days, a strong advocate of the need for an internet
presence when advising commercial clients.
But there has always been one organisation I could never quite
satisfy. One nightmare customer whose requirements would repeatedly
‘double six’ me. Whatever I wrote was wrong. Try as I might, I
never could achieve the desired ‘tone of voice’. I never did correctly
encapsulate this client’s business ethos. And never could I get
my invoice paid…
Eventually, fed up with banging my head against a brick wall, I decided
that it might be nice to stop. In reluctant capitulation, I advised the troublesome
client that an internet presence really wasn’t his answer.
Which is precisely why – until now – this website never existed...
Why was it so hard? Well, for a start, I couldn’t describe what
I do simply as copywriting (which many people assume relates essentially
to advertising). I invariably find myself acting as a sort of ‘words
consultant’ for anything written or spoken – anything to do with
communication in the widest sense. I’ve been a voice-over artist
for many years, too. Try coming up with something snappy to cover
all that. I couldn’t.
Anyway I did, eventually, decide that it was time to bite the bullet
and join the 21st Century. So this is my website, right or wrong…
