The first award honored Messiaen himself, and was presented to the composer's widow, pianist Yvonne Loriod-Messiaen, at a ceremony at the university in western New York State on 17 October 2003.

The abstract painter Mark Rowan-Hull's exhibition Seeing Music, Hearing Colour has taken its impetus from the music of Olivier Messiaen, and is inspired by themes such as transubstantiation and synaesthesia – the joining of senses. The Royal Festival Hall commissioned Mark Rowan-Hull to collaborate as part of its series of Messiaen organ recitals to mark the tenth anniversary of the composer's death. This culminated in a performance at the Royal Festival Hall on 19 February 2002 and a feature on BBC Radio 3. Building on the excitement his work has created and the interest generated by the performance at the Royal Festival Hall, Mark Rowan-Hull extended this project in the exhibition Seeing Music, Hearing Colour. This exhibition took place at St James's Church, Piccadilly between 2-16 April 2002. The church was chosen as the ideal setting to convey Messiaen's religious beliefs, and links specifically with the Royal Academy exhibition Paris: Capital Of The Arts which ran until April 12. Olivier Messiaen, born in 1908, was also a central figure in the modern movement in Paris.
Mark Rowan-Hull's exhibition involved the viewer being surrounded by sound and colour: the colour in the form of paintings in response to passages of Messiaen's music, and sound in the form of looped passages of Messiaen's organ music recorded by the world renowned virtuoso Dame Gillian Weir. Indeed, Dame Gillian Weir herself has described Messiaen as 'The inimitable painter of sound'. Mark Rowan-Hull can be contacted at: rowan-hull@ntlworld.com

Due for release in August 2004 this long awaited recording of Eclairs sur l'Au Dela by Sir Simon Rattle and the Berlin Phil promises to deliver all the fire, solemnity and power of any of the present recordings of this final orchestral masterpiece that Rattle calls 'Messiaen's missa solemnis'
New Recording of Poemes Pour Mi / Theme & Variations / Le Merle Noir / Petites Esquisses d'Oiseaux and 2 movements from Vingt Regards sur l'Enfant Jesus by this enterprising and versatile quartet of young artists.

Focus on Olivier Messiaen
The Philadelphia Orchestra

Christoph Eschenbach has programmed a season-long focus on the composer Olivier Messiaen, presenting works that exemplify the composer's profound spirituality, explore his fascination with Asian musical traditions, and span his career as a composer. The focus on Messiaen encompasses four weeks of concerts and two chamber music programs.
Messiaen Focus Week I (October 2-7): Messiaen's signature masterpiece, the Turangalîla Symphony, paired with an appearance by Gamelan Semara Santi of Swarthmore College, a traditional Balinese Gamelan ensemble led by Balinese gamelan master I Nyoman Suadin. The program, which will be introduced by Christoph Eschenbach from the stage, explores the connections between the Balinese musical tradition and Messiaen's work. Guest artists Jean-Yves Thibaudet, piano, and Jean Laurendeau, ondes martenot, join Mr. Eschenbach for this program.
Messiaen Focus Week II (October 9-11): The first of two Messiaen programs organized around the theme of spirituality, focusing on Messiaen's profoundly spiritual works, paired with pieces that connote spiritual aspects of another composer's life and world. This program features Messiaen's L'Ascension, Four Symphonic Meditations, alongside the Berg Violin Concerto, featuring guest soloist Christian Tetzlaff.
Messiaen Focus Week III (February 6-7, 2004): Simon Rattle conducts another major orchestral work by Messiaen, Éclairs sur l'Au-delà. Dating from 1992, it is one of Messiaen's last works, a massive and spectacular piece, scored for more than 120 musicians, including a formidable battery of percussion. The breathtaking orchestral colors and textures of Messiaen's work are carried through the rest of the program, which includes Debussy's Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune and Ravel's Shéhérazade, with guest mezzo-soprano Rinat Shaham.
Messiaen Focus Week IV (May 6-8, 2004): The second of two spirituality-themed programs pairs Messiaen's Les Offrandes oubliées with Bruckner's Symphony No. 7. Bruckner, like Messiaen, drew great inspiration from his Roman Catholic faith; and one of his most-loved symphonies will take on new meaning in this unusual pairing.
• Two Chamber Music Concerts (October 12, 2003, and May 2, 2004) also feature works by Messiaen. Mr. Eschenbach appears at the piano, teaming up with guest pianist Tzimon Barto, for Messiaen's Visions de l'Amen for two pianos. And members of The Philadelphia Orchestra join Mr. Eschenbach for Messiaen's chamber music masterpiece Quartet for the End of Time, for clarinet, violin, cello, and piano.
• The Orchestra also will give the world premiere (September 18-23) of a new work by composer Gerald Levinson, who studied with Olivier Messiaen at the Paris Conservatory. Levinson also will appear as a participant in the Orchestra's focus on Messiaen, sharing his personal insights on Messiaen's work.

saw a production of WAR MUSIC by Bryan Davidson and directed by Jessica Kubzansky. Based upon dramatic events in the lives of composers Frank Bridge, Anton Webern, and Olivier Messiaen, this emotionally-charged new play weaves a dreamy, theatrical tapestry of war and music. Playwright Bryan Davidson constructs War Music into three dynamic, musically-driven playlets, each linked by warfare, madness, redemption, and, ultimately, the resilient spirit of the human condition. War Music was named one of the top ten notable plays of 2002 by the Los Angeles Times and won the Los Angeles Ovation Award for World Premiere Play in 2003.
