Messiaen
wrote a vast amount of music including many test and sight reading pieces when
he was teaching at the Ecole Normale de Musique during the 1930s and many early
works were either discarded or considered as 'mere student exercises and not
worth publishing'; so some of these works and others that are unpublished to
date are in italics.
Comprehensive
details of all works and their background can be found in the highly recommended
'Olivier Messiaen a Bibliographical Catalogue' by the eminent
musicologist Nigel Simeone who together with Peter Hill are constantly unearthing
hitherto unknown Messiaen facts and musical 'gems' by having access to some
of the composers letters and diary entries throughout his working life.
