All alone in the night (27/08/00 )
...Then we'll prepare.... Al, I do believe your right, but we must plan for an all out offensive. Now lay in a course for VDS1, Let's get to that last Wall of Hope....
Waking with a start the old fox, with bleary eyed wonder, gazed at his Chronometer which read 12:00 am. For some reason something didn't seem right.
His link bleeped and he tabbed it with his finger.
"Yes, what is it? You realize its 12:00 am?"
A female voice answered back, "Yes Admiral, but this is important, please come to c&c"
"Understood, I'll be there in 10 minutes... Torvaine out."
Slipping out of bed, he took a quick hydroshower, slipped into a duty uniform and made his way to command and control. He walked out along the observation, the long route.
What a night, he thought, I've never had one before.... well not since Ryana had Tycko... Ryana...my loving wife...she was always the practical one, and here I am, trying to save the universe.
An Ensign, nearly a pup and barely out of the General Academy, handed him a data pad, Logistics.... Tritium request for the fusion cells. He signed the request and stopped, watching the young Ensign zip off to his duty station.
To be that young again... What would I do differently... everything.... Ryana, we would have been there during the raid, I could have stopped them... you would have....Tycko, I wish...
"Sir, are you alright?" A canine female, Staff Sergeant, inquired.
"Yes, staff sergeant, just remembering some old regrets..." He gazed out at the stars.
"Aye sir, we all have them. Some are more bitter than others, but we live with them and a rare few manage to express them to their loved ones and seek solace in their forgiveness. Those of us that keep it inside have no end of nightmares and regrets and when that person dies the pain eats us up from the inside... it is best to talk to them before it is too late..."
"Perhaps, but will he... uh, they ever forgive... even if the pain is too great?"
"Yes.."
The Admiral Swung around, "but, how..." The Sergeant was no where to be seen, "who...." Torvaine shook his head, he felt like he was waking from a dream.... again.
He entered the turbo shaft and rode it up to c&c. He stepped out onto the command deck.
A security trooper announced "Admiral on deck!" and snapped to attention. The command staff did the same. For some reason everyone seemed distant, he felt alone. Gazing out the view screen at the depths of space... all alone in the night, an endless night.
"The comm officer received the message, sir" the operations commander said, a slight strained tone could be heard in her voice.
Torvaine read the dispatch and his jaw dropped. His eyes were on the verge of misting "no...... not him too...."
