Dialogue: Twisted Conscience (30/04/00 )
“Philip Dylan III, codenamed 'Orion'. Distinguished military man, son of a distinguished military man, who in turn was the son of a distinguished military man. Are you anything but that legacy, Dylan?”
“I’d hope so. I try to be. Who are you?”
“Captain Orion. Friend to all, down to the least of the hired help. Do you attend every funeral too, weep at every loss? Surely you sign the deaths of the men and women you shake hands with, daily. Do you ever consider that, Captain Phil?”
“Every day. Every single day… but what else am I to do? These at least are soldiers. The innocents suffering on Vendoria and Acciptera—”
“And what if you lose? Which you will, most likely. You’re a Council puppet, there to take blame and forward mistakes when you’re not busy killing your men. You can only resist their agendas and their stupidity so long before they depose you, and that will be the end of your ‘altruism.’”
“You’re contradicting yourself.”
“Au contraire, Philippe, these are all your own words. Your station is falling apart, your material is running out, and your people are dying. You won’t surrender, I’m sure, you’ll be a stubborn and willful fool to the bitter end. And then you’ll die, or live in a steel-and-silicon galaxy—whichever comes first, though both are inevitable.”
“…I refuse to believe that. Gyran has weaknesses. Like that network that turned against him…”
“Lithinos is a myth or a deception. And even if it weren’t, it’s not going to conquer Gyran Prime. Or even Geltor, for that matter. You know, it would be a healthy thing for a commanding officer to have a firm grasp of reality.”
“Hope is still a part of reality.”
“For the victors, it is. For those with superior numbers, resources, and information. The big G has all that—and now he knows your name. Welcome to the beginning of the end, Philip Dylan.”
And the three great warships converged on VDS1. One Human, one Kalai, and one robot, they formed a triangle of impending doom around the drowning battlestation.
