I've run this idea by SabreCat, he doesn't see any problem with it. It's a theoritical idea about how shields function, I'm hoping this can define problems you can have with the bloody things.
Shields are not made of energy. They are made of tiny tiny machines, nanomachines if the race in question has them, that are made to mirror energy attacks. The energy that is not reflected is diffused throughout the whole web. They are held in an ellipsoid shape by magnetic fields(thus making a magnetic weapon perfect to punch a whole in them), and can also deflect solid metal objects by focusing the magnets to push them away. When hit by concentrated beams, many of the bits will burn out, reducing the efficiency.
What this amounts to is that the basic Star Trek shield theory will hold up.
