Caltheans (17/07/99 )
Caltheans.
The calthean race has never had it easy: their racial talent of polymorphism lends itself naturally to deception and trickery.
When the caltheans discovered space travel, they were quick to sell their skills to the highest bidder, becoming spies and assassins for other races all over the galaxy. Very quickly the calthean homeworld became wealthy, and the entire calthean economy turned to supply these agents with the best ships and equipment possible.
Of course, over-efficiency also has it’s price, and soon their clients began to fear the threat the caltheans posed. Rumours spread that the caltheans were responsible for several major wars (and who’s to say they weren’t?) and quickly a shaky truce was called. Several warring races quickly ended their quarrels and united against the insidious Caltheans.
Calthean agents among the fleets led to high casualties among the invaders, but the blows struck to the assassins’ homeworld were deep and wide, leaving it little more than a smoking rock.
Nowadays caltheans are careful to avoid attracting the attentions of other races, spreading themselves thinly across the galaxy, and never mentioning their origins.
Appearance:
Caltheans are gaunt, pale skinned humanoids, with thin lips and sunken cheeks. Hair colours range from white through to black, but is usually a shade of grey.
While it’s possible to duplicate additional limbs, wings and such, it requires extensive training and considerable talent. Very few assassins are that adept. Furthermore, Calthean eyes sometimes glitter red and blue in the light. Again, this can be prevented with training, but some paranoid agencies are trained to look for the telltale flash.
Caltheans tend to a very bland dress sense, and a morbid sense of humour. Most take their way of life very seriously, as their world can no longer support agriculture.
Equipment:
Calthean favour miniturisation and stealth over firepower and brute strength. Weapons are tiny versions of their conventional counterparts, and their ships are sleek black needles, little more than engines and cockpits.
