Alien Races (23/06/99 )
Zutorkians: Hairless humanoids, with average height and muscle mass somewhat greater than Humans’. They have three-fingered hands and feet with two toes, and have thick hairless skin that ranges in color from dull gray to light purple.
Their eyes are narrow and usually yellow or yellow-orange, and their facial features are almost geometric, with flat noses and no visible ears.
The Zutorkians have a warrior culture, with various clans controlled by a central oligarchic government. The clans compete for dominance to some degree, but not to the same extent as the Kalai—when the central Zutorkian authority calls for it, the clans will band together without question (usually for battle against another race). Thus, so far there have been few Zutorkians willing to break away and join the Human and Vendorian-dominated Alliance, but there are a few.
Homeworld: Zutorkia
Main colony systems: Kozzka, Valzek, Tzo
Language: Zutorkian
Vendorians: So like Humans that first contact with them set philosophical circles abuzz with discussion, the most distinguishing feature of these people is their pointed ears. They tend to be fair-skinned, with blue, gold, or violet eyes, and shimmering blond hair—but there is a significant minority of dark-skinned, brown-eyed, black-haired Vendorians. They are often slightly shorter than Humans. Some (between .5% and 1% of the population) hold latent psionic powers, but these usually can only manifest if the power is discovered and the Vendorian in question goes through rigorous mental training under one of the Oolorae.
The Vendorians had a completely peaceful culture before the Wars of Dawn, an Athenian democracy made possible with technology and their great intelligence. When they found that the Humans needed help, they quickly established communication and lent aid, taking on the use of weapons for the greater good. They now seek a quick end to war, deeply resenting the repression of their quiet ways—especially now that Gyran has occupied their planet.
Homeworld: Vendoria
Main colony systems: Janel, Tayar
Language: Vendorian
Plutonians: Borderline humanoid, these glutinous-skinned creatures are deemed ugly by most other races. Their skin ranges in color from brown to tar-black, and their three eyes are beady and yellow. They have no visible nose or ears on their formless heads, but do have small yet noticeable mouths.
The Plutonians have a tendency toward sadism and general cruelty, so there is no organized Plutonian society; most keep to themselves in their underground habitations. The exceptions are the Plutonian slave lords, who keep numbers of other Plutonians under their employ (and treat them however they please). These are the ones who most often build starships and venture into war.
Homeworld: Pluto (in the Sol system!)
Colony system: Glinchh (Alpha Centauri)
Language: Pluton
Oolorae: Bipedal creatures with bulbous bodies, sets of four tentacles instead of arms, and a large and eerie eyeball instead of a head. Their scaly hides are tan or reddish in color. They have no verbal communication, but instead project thoughts into the minds of other sentients. Their telepathic abilities extend beyond mere communication, but they rarely discuss how far.
The Oolorae are rare—usually only as many as two reside in any given Alliance system, and often only one, or none do.
The Oolorae seen in Alliance space are descendants of a number who came on a centuries-old generation ship, so little is known about their homeworld culture. Known Oolorae often serve as mediators and judges, their immense intelligence allowing them to make wise decisions readily. Most shun war.
Homeworld: Ooloraao
Colony system: Ael (where the generation ship is kept)
Language: Oolorae mindspeech
Kalai: Bipedal felinoids, the Kalai look like highly humanoid versions of Earth cats. They have tails, retractable claws, and fur of varying lengths and shades. Some have lion-like manes or human-like hair; others have only the same kind of fur as the rest of the body atop the head. Kalai of the royal bloodline sometimes exhibit psionic powers that include telekinesis; having such powers is a requirement for Kalai wanting the throne.
Kalai culture has changed significantly. When Humans and Vendorians first discovered them, they had an unstable feudal system, with power-hungry house lords and a queen who initiated the Third War of Dawn in a play for territory. After the war, which was hastened along by internal attacks on the corrupt regime, Kalai wanting a better society took power, limiting the monarchy and joining the Alliance. Conservative members of the race still love the old codes of honor, which glorified combat and rank ambition, and more liberal members are practically Human in outlook. The conflict is a notable part of Kalai politics that continues to this day.
Homeworld: Kaliar
Colony systems: Rajai, Kirin, Miorran
Language: Kalai; has a simple common tongue and a complex formal tongue
