What's new in detail

New structure, layout and design of website

This is now the new version of my website. It has many new features, and should be more accessible and easier to navigate. Here are some of the changes:

  • a simplified layout and more navigable structure of the site
  • more material in all sections, made more accessible
  • information on the new COMMUNITAS PROJECT (training & learning events for leaders, managers, facilitators, consultants on organisations, groups, group leading, group dynamics)
  • an updated list of papers & publications, including recent and some as yet unpublished writing
  • an updated list of events & workshops, including workshops on 'enactment' and new master classes
  • an improved page of links and related sites
  • a new list of presentations available, some of them accessible as downloads
  • a new footer on all pages, from which you can reach key pages (e.g. Help, Site Map, etc)
  • a new 'Search' feature, that can find search terms throughout the whole site (accessible on the Help page)
  • a new 'Print' feature, for restricting print-outs to text only

There are still sections that are incomplete, but having set up the basic structure of the site, I will fill these holes as and when I can. The site is still heavily biased towards text, with long pages, and I am working to simplify some of the material and provide some 'introductory tours' in the various sections.

I am sure that mistakes have crept in here and there - if you find that some things do not work, I would really appreciate comments, feedback and corrections.

2008/2009 programme of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) events for counsellors and psychotherapists

You can find a list of all events I will be running or will be involved with in my updated calendar page (workshops, seminars, lectures, conferences, etc). This list also includes all workshops which I will be running as part of Chiron's Advanced & Professional Development Programme (for these events, please book through Chiron).

You will find an overview list of just titles, a detailed calendar including venues, times, cost and booking information and a table of event descriptions. You can also view lists of just the next few upcoming events, recent events and all past events.

The CPD pages for counsellors and psychotherapists also include information on upcoming projects, including my new workshops series on 'enactment', called HOW DOES ENACTMENT TRANSFORM ?

This series of workshops is planned to be organised and run in different locations throughout the UK over the next few years. No specific dates and venues have been arranged yet. At this point I am collecting names and contact details of those interested. I also invite practitioners to become local organisers, to help me set up a series of workshops in their region. Please use the online form to communicate your interest and I will get in touch in due course.

Handouts from UKCP Supervision conference (Feb. 3rd 2007)

Rather than emailing the handouts to everybody, you can download them here. There is the summary of the presentation and four handouts, plus the booklist (which - please note - was not specifically designed for the purpose of this workshop).

Articles / Papers

On my articles page you can access extracts, overviews and summaries of my published writing. The full text of these articles and papers is available by registering here for free. You send the pre-formatted email to sothsiteadmin@googlemail.com and you gain immediate access through the link that will be sent back via email to you. My teaching hand-outs will go up as and when I have published them.

New and recent writing (Nov. 2008)

New and recent writing (Dec. 2007)

There are some new articles which I wrote for the BACP journal Therapy Today, in connection with the Annual Conference 2006.

I have been more dedicated to writing over the last year, and the first piece presenting more comprehensively the concepts and ideas I have developed and taught over the last 10 years. It published as a chapter in Totton, Nick (2005) "New Horizons in Body Psychotherapy", published Sep. 2005. I've uploaded some extracts from the chapter, to whet your appetite - for the whole chapter, you need to wait for and buy the book. This chapter was slimmed down, chopped, reduced, decimated from 16,000 to 6,000 words, so I will try to make the long version available soon - please contact me if you are interested.

Following a conference in May 2006 for counsellors in primary care, I have been asked to write something for the Healthcare Counselling and Psychotherapy Journal (hcpj) by the editor, Penny Gray, and the result is called: Psychotherapy - the 'Relating Cure'. The format is as responses to some questions which Penny put to me, and this was published in October 2006. You can find extracts on my articles page. The full text of the longer version, which was edited to suit the Journal, is available through registering as described above.

I have also been busy turning my presentation to the 2004 UKCP conference into a chapter and a paper for the new 'Journal of Body, Movement and Dance in Psychotherapy'. It's called What therapeutic hope for a subjective mind in an objectified body? . In the presentation I am working towards a body/mind holistic phenomenology of relationship, including a body/mind account of transference and countertransference, hinging mainly on the notions of re-enactment and parallel process. If you looked at it before, there is now a more complete conclusion and a significant appendix on attending to the whole body/mind, and how the fragmented field of psychotherapy mirrors the fragmented body/mind. This has now also been published as a chapter in a book: Soth, M. (2006) "What therapeutic hope for a subjective mind in an objectified body? " - in: Corrigall, J., Payne, H., Wilkinson, H. (2006) About A Body. London: Routledge

And I am hoping to complete some writing, bringing an integral-relational perspective to the important work of Allan Schore and the recent work of Ken Wilber.

There is a sneak preview of a paper on 'Working with Dialogue' and the dilemmas which can be anticipated when using this technique. It's partly a question of integrating Gestalt with transference, but there's more to it. This is a long didactic teaching paper, and suitable for students, graduates as well as experienced practitioners. The first part is now finished and I will be publishing it soon, and it weill also be available as a booklet.
